World-renowned Yokohama Rubber Company, Ltd, a manufacturer of automotive tires, was founded in 1917 in the city of Yokohama with the participation of Kanazawa Prefecture and Cable Manufacturing Company, Ltd. Just two years later, in the same city, the company's first tire plant was built and quickly put into operation.

Early Brand History

The tires produced by this plant were innovative products for Japan in the early 20th century. In addition to tires, the company also produced other products related to the automotive industry. In 1921, the company established the production of various rubber drive belts, which were significantly more reliable than the leather belts commonly used at that time. The high quality of the products contributed to the company's rapid growth in popularity, with its product range constantly expanding.

Tires with the Yokohama brand first appeared on the market in 1930, and in 1934, the company began its first attempts to promote the young brand to the global market. The breakthrough came in 1935, when its tires began to be used by companies such as Toyota and Nissan for the standard equipment of their vehicles. In the same year, the company from Yokohama acquired the status of an official supplier of tires to the Japanese imperial court, with an obligation to supply 24 tires annually.

During the War and After

During World War II, the company received numerous military orders and was even forced to start activities in unfamiliar areas, such as the production of tires for Japanese fighter jets. To fulfill the orders for aircraft tires, another plant was built in 1944, which is still operational today.

After Japan's defeat in the war, the country's economy plunged into crisis. However, as was the case with many Japanese companies, the tire manufacturer managed to retain its business, having received orders from the American military for the production of tires for aircraft used in the Korean War.

Despite the fact that in the 1960s, the company significantly increased the production of automotive tires, its main customers remained the military. The production of products under military orders was no longer limited to just aircraft tires. The company actively developed the production processes of various rubber components. In 1969, the company's subsidiary in the United States was registered and began its activities.

Product Range

Any car enthusiast knows Yokohama as a renowned tire manufacturer for sports cars. The company from Yokohama strives to maintain this reputation, fully deserved by the quality of its "rubber". It constantly acts as one of the main suppliers of tires for many major world championships, such as the World Touring Car Championship. The Japanese company also produces tires for a wide range of vehicles, from small sports sedans and large all-wheel-drive SUVs to large buses and trucks.

The company's headquarters has long since moved to Tokyo, the capital of Japan. The company currently owns several other well-known and popular brands, such as ADVAN, which is particularly popular in Japan, as well as Geolandar, AVID, Parada, S.drive, and others. At present, the company is one of the largest not only in Japan but also in the world, producing a wide range of products related to the release of rubber-technical products.
