The first production samples went on sale only in December 1997. For three years, engineers solved numerous technical problems related not only to the continuously variable transmission but also to the battery, which required a service life of 7 to 10 years. This problem was solved by adjusting the control system, which maintained the charge level between 40 and 60%, which was an optimal indicator in terms of the durability of the power elements.

Initial Version

The car that debuted in 1997 used the MC platform, which it shared with most compact and mid-size Toyota and Lexus models. The choice was due to the presence in the lineup of several options that differed in floor height. The niche under it was used to accommodate the battery and inverter, assembled on the same transistors used in the Shinkansen high-speed trains. Under the hood was a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine with 58, and then 70 horsepower. It worked together with a 44-horsepower electric motor and a continuously variable transmission. The drive was exclusively on the front axle. Already at the testing stage, the dependence of the power unit's performance on ambient temperature and altitude was revealed. There was no technical possibility to solve this problem at that time, so an indicator in the form of a turtle appeared on the instrument panel, signaling the impending shutdown of the power unit.

Working on Mistakes

Just two years after the launch of the first generation, Toyota began working on a car of the next generation. In essence, this was "working on mistakes" made mainly due to extremely tight design deadlines for the predecessor. First of all, the body was changed, becoming much more aerodynamic. The drag coefficient was reduced to extremely low values even by modern standards - 0.26. Another innovation was the minimization of the number of belt drives on the internal combustion engine. The air conditioner compressor and power steering received electromechanical drives. The next important change was the traction battery. It uses NiMH elements, distributed over 28 independent modules with separate charge controllers and relays. They are connected in series, and the electronic control system maintains the charge level within the range of 40 to 80%. At the same time, the average value fluctuates around 60%, maintaining about 400 Vt, using not only the internal combustion engine but also the energy received through recuperation during braking. In this mode, the traction battery could withstand tens of thousands of charge cycles, which meant a service life of tens of years and a mileage of up to 320,000 kilometers. The problem of the negative impact of high and low ambient temperatures was solved by using forced cooling and an air duct system.

Changing the Concept

In 2022, the Japanese brand introduced the fifth-generation car. It differs from its predecessors not only in aggressive styling but also in a significantly changed concept. The car uses a modernized version of the modular TNGA platform, which has a lower center of gravity and significantly increased stiffness in bending and torsion. Added to this is a chassis with MacPherson struts at the front and an independent 2-link suspension at the rear. This has brought a lot of "sport" to the handling of the family liftback. With its lack in the lineup of versions, there is a modification with a 148-horsepower Dynamic Force gasoline engine with a volume of 2 liters.
