Шины на Toyota FJ Cruiser (Тоуота)

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is a mid-size SUV that was produced from 2006 to 2022. Its appearance, which features a distinctive retro-style design, was well-received by potential buyers when the concept car was unveiled at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show.

History of Creation

Toyota has been producing SUVs since the 1960s, releasing models such as the FJ40, which was discontinued in 1983. As a result, in the 1990s, the Japanese brand entered the market with the larger Land Cruiser, which prioritized comfort over off-road capability. The idea of creating a new SUV with the same off-road capabilities as the FJ40 emerged among the company's planning and sales department. In secret, Toyota and GM's joint venture in California attempted to combine the Tacoma pickup truck's frame with the Bandeirantes SUV's body, which was based on the original FJ40, still being produced in Brazil at the time. The project was successful enough to gain the approval of the board of directors, and the design was developed by Toyota's Calty design studio. The target audience was young male buyers, who at the time did not often prefer Toyota vehicles. During the development process, several dozen concepts were created before the retro-style design, created by 24-year-old Jin Won Kim, was approved. The interior was designed by William Chergosky. The concept SUV was unveiled in Detroit in 2003 in Voodoo Blue, which later became the most popular color for the production model. In mid-2004, testing of prototype vehicles began, which took place in the most challenging climate conditions in regions such as the Mojave Desert and the Rubicon Trail in the Sierra Nevada. The official premiere of the production model, which had the same exterior design as the concept, took place in 2005.

Technical Features

The 2005 SUV featured a classic layout, similar to the 2-door Prado, but with a different chassis. The front suspension used two high-mounted transverse control arms and a stabilizer bar, while the rear suspension used a live axle with springs and a stabilizer bar. All suspension components were taken from the Prado, as well as the Tacoma and Hilux pickup trucks. Additionally, the vehicle was equipped with a disc brake system and a wide range of electronic aids, including a special version of the A-TRAC traction control system, which mimicked the operation of differentials. The powertrain consisted of a 4.0-liter V6 gasoline engine with a variable valve timing system, which produced 239 horsepower and 377 Nm of torque. Until 2011, the engine was repeatedly updated, resulting in a power increase to 259 horsepower, while reducing fuel consumption and flattening the torque curve. The manufacturer offered a wider range of transmissions. The base model came with rear-wheel drive and a 5-speed automatic transmission, as well as a self-locking rear differential. More expensive trim levels offered a part-time four-wheel drive system with a transfer case and a 5-speed automatic transmission. An alternative to this version was a full-time four-wheel drive system with a Torsen center differential, which could be locked. In this version, the vehicle came with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. Production of the FJ Cruiser was discontinued in December 2022. Nevertheless, tires and wheels for the vehicle can still be purchased from the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
