The Toyota Previa was present in the model range of the Japanese brand from 1990 to 2019. It was a minivan that was a step below the flagship Alphard in terms of equipment and price range. The model name was taken from Spanish and translates to "previous" or "preliminary".

First Generation

The car, which debuted in 1990, was developed at the North American division of the Japanese brand, as it was initially intended for the US and Canadian markets. The minivan stood out for its large dimensions, which were significantly reduced due to the teardrop-shaped body with practically no flat panels. Another feature of the model was its mid-engine layout. The power unit, an in-line "four" engine, was located under the front seats, tilted at an angle of 75 degrees relative to the vertical axis, which significantly minimized the size of the engine compartment, allowing for additional space inside the cabin. The engine range initially consisted of a 2.4-liter "atmospheric" gasoline engine, developing 135 horsepower and 206 Nm. In 1994, a turbocharged version with 163 horsepower and 273 Nm was added, which was much better suited to the mid-size minivan. Depending on the version, the power unit worked in conjunction with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-range "automatic". The base versions had rear-wheel drive, and for more equipped modifications, a four-wheel drive system with an interaxial differential was available, distributing traction between the axles in equal proportions.

The minivan was offered with two cabin layout options. The base versions were designed to carry up to 8 people, and the more expensive ones offered 2 separate seats in the middle row, or a 2-seat solid bench, shifted towards the "driver's" side of the cabin. Another feature was the front console with a "flow" towards the passenger side. It's worth noting the huge area of glazing, which, on the one hand, provided the minivan with excellent visibility from the inside, and on the other hand, created problems with the temperature inside during hot weather. Later, this problem was partially neutralized by the possibility of ordering glasses with sun protection as an additional option. In addition to them, the list included two sliding hatches, while the roof in such versions was located 30 mm higher than the standard one, without reducing the space above the passengers' heads.

Second Generation

The next-generation minivan appeared in early 2000. It retained the concept of its predecessor but had no technical connection with it. This was due to the transition to a different platform, a modified version of the "cart" from the mid-size Camry sedan with a classic layout and front-wheel drive. The car became slightly longer, gaining mainly due to the wheelbase - 2900 mm, while narrowing and decreasing in height. In addition to the Camry platform, the engines were also taken - a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with 156 horsepower, as well as a 2-liter diesel engine, developing 116 horsepower.

Third Generation

In 2006, the Japanese brand introduced the third-generation minivan. This time, it was created on the MC platform, sharing it with the flagship Alphard, and borrowing a significant part of the technical components from it. In particular, it included adaptive headlights that illuminated the road surface in turns, "captain's" chairs on the second row with folding footrests, and electrically folding separate seats in the "gallery". Additionally, for versions with a V6 engine, a lane departure warning system and adaptive cruise control were available.

In 2016, the car underwent a fairly significant update, affecting its exterior design. It became even more aggressive thanks to narrowed LED headlights, vertical strips of running lights, and a black-painted radiator grille. The cabin was equipped with a new front console, multimedia system, and instrument panel with an analog speedometer. And in the list of options, in addition to genuine leather, there was a fabric material that felt like nubuck. Technically, the changes were minor and affected the engine range, from which the top gasoline V6 disappeared.
