Tires on Toyota Belta (Тоуота)
Introduced to the world in 2005, the Toyota Belta was more than just a new subcompact sedan. It became a strategic global project for the Japanese auto giant, designed to fill the market niche between compact hatchbacks and classic C-class sedans. The model was positioned as a successor to the Platz and differed by its increased dimensions, offering interior space comparable to the Corolla E120.One Car Under Different Names
A key feature of the model was its adaptive marketing strategy. Under its own name "Belta", the car was sold primarily on the domestic Japanese market. However, for international expansion, "Toyota" used proven local brands. In Southeast Asia and China, it was introduced in April 2007 as the second-generation Vios. In the Middle East markets, in some Asian countries, as well as in North America, where there were no Yaris sedans, the model was sold under the name Yaris Sedan. This multiple naming made it one of the most recognizable and widely distributed compact sedans in the world in the late 2000s and early 2010s.
Technical Features and Differences
Despite sharing the platform with the Toyota Vitz hatchback, the Belta was an independent design project developed in Japan. This allowed for the creation of a unique body with excellent aerodynamics (0.29) and an interior adapted to the preferences of sedan buyers.
Powertrains
Japan — buyers were offered highly efficient but compact engines: a 1.0-liter three-cylinder 1KR-FE (71 hp) and two 1.3-liter engines 2NZ-FE and 2SZ-FE (both 87 hp). For the Japanese market, the Super CVT-i variator and all-wheel drive for the 2NZ-FE version were exclusive.
International markets (including Russia) — the basis was formed by more familiar in-line "fours" with volumes of 1.3 liters and 1.5 liters with a power of around 100-110 hp, working in pair with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed "automatic".
China — the lineup included a top 1.6-liter engine 1ZR-FE with the Dual VVT-i system, which was a unique offer for this market.
Legacy
The model was produced worldwide: in Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. This ensured its affordable price and allowed it to conquer the status of a bestseller in many countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. Its production fate also turned out differently. In Japan, production ended in 2012, and it was replaced by the Corolla Axio. In North America, the sedan was replaced in 2015 by a model based on the Mazda2 platform. In Australia and New Zealand, sales continued until 2014-2016. In developing markets (Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America), the second generation was replaced by a new model based on the XP150 platform as early as 2013.
The total production of "Belta" and its numerous "twins" is estimated at almost 2.5 million units. Interestingly, the name itself was revived by Toyota in 2021 for a rebadged model of the Suzuki Ciaz, sold in Africa, which testifies to the preserved value of this brand for certain markets. It remains a vivid example of a flexible global strategy, where one successful technical basis, clothed in different names and with minor technical variations, was able to win the hearts of buyers on all continents. This can also be judged by the impressive number of operating cars in the Russian region. For them, high-quality tires and disks can always be found in the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
