The Toyota Aygo X debuted in the Japanese brand's lineup in 2021. Unlike its namesake hatchback, this car, although belonging to the A segment, turned out to be closer to subcompact crossovers in its concept.

Initial Version

Despite its name, the car is built on the basis of a larger model - the Yaris. The same modular GA-B platform is used here, but in a simplified version with drum brake mechanisms at the rear. This is precisely what caused the noticeably increased dimensions compared to the standard Aygo. The car became 235 mm longer, 125 mm wider, and 55 mm higher. The passenger seating position changed, becoming more vertical. All this significantly increased the volume of the luggage compartment - up to 231 liters.

The development of the exterior was handled by designers from the French ED studio, who tried to give the car the appearance of a crossover. To do this, the windshield slope was reduced to 24 degrees, the wheel arches were equipped with plastic trim that encircles the lower part of the body along its entire perimeter. At the same time, the characteristic features of the previous model were preserved, in particular, the huge hatch in the roof, covered with a soft fabric top, which shifted backwards manually, as well as the tilting windows in the rear doors.

Together with the Yaris platform, the car also inherited a significant part of the equipment. Already in the basic configuration, there are 7 airbags, one of which is located between the front seats, as well as a Smart Connect multimedia system with a 9-inch display and a JBL audio system with a subwoofer. The car is equipped with a "proprietary" complex of electronic assistants, including an automatic braking system that works based on data from the front camera and radar.

Under the hood was a engine from the previous model - a 1-liter gasoline "three" with a power of 72 hp. Depending on the version of the equipment, the power unit works in "pair" with a 5-speed manual transmission or with a variator.

Updated Version

In 2025, the car underwent a fairly significant update. Against the background of its predecessor, it stood out with a new front-end design, featuring different headlights, a bumper, and a radiator grille. The rearview mirrors were equipped with turn signal repeaters, which were previously located on the front fenders. The salon of the cross-hatchback underwent smaller changes, which was distinguished by a more modern climate control panel, a 7-inch instrument panel display, a larger multimedia system screen, a platform for wireless smartphone charging, and two USB-C connectors.

The most significant changes were in the technical part. The car received a hybrid power unit from the Yaris, which is one step higher, which led to the differences in the exterior design described above. In particular, in order to accommodate a 1.5-liter gasoline "four" with an electromechanical variator under the hood, it was necessary to extend the front overhang by 76 mm. The traction battery was located under the rear sofa, and the 12-volt battery "moved" from under the hood to the "basement" of the luggage compartment. The use of a different power unit significantly increased the traction of the hatchback - 116 hp at peak load compared to 72 hp of the predecessor.
