The Toyota Raize debuted in the Japanese brand's production lineup in 2019. The vehicle is positioned as the most compact and affordable Toyota crossover.

Technical Features

The development began in 2017 and was carried out by Daihatsu specialists. Initially, it was planned to make it larger, but these plans were rejected by the Japanese brand's management, which preferred a different concept, largely borrowed from "kei cars". The crossover, in particular, borrowed their modular DNGA platform, and in terms of dimensions, it turned out to be smaller than the Kia Soul and Nissan Juke, except for the height, which reaches 1.62 meters, a characteristic feature of Japanese "kei cars". With a wheelbase of 2525 mm, it significantly surpasses them. Another feature of the car is its chassis. At the front, a classic "MacPherson" is used, and at the rear, the most compact version of the semi-independent suspension - a twisting beam. The ground clearance is 185 mm.

The engine lineup starts with a "naturally aspirated" 3-cylinder 1.2-liter engine with 86 horsepower and 113 Nm of torque. As an alternative, a 1-liter in-line "trio" with 97 horsepower and 140 Nm of torque is offered. In the base versions, both power units work in tandem with a 5-speed "mechanics" or a D-CVT variator, which, when reaching 60 km/h, engages a mechanical overdrive gear, reducing fuel consumption. The most expensive modifications are equipped with a hybrid power plant based on a 1.2-liter "atmospheric", which is used as a generator for the traction electric motor, which rotates the wheels. At peak loads, it can deliver up to 105 horsepower and 170 Nm. "By default", all versions have front-wheel drive only. For an extra charge, a multi-disc clutch on the rear axle is offered, and it is available even with the "base" engine.

Equipment

Another feature of the base versions of the crossover is the frankly sparse equipment, which instead of the multimedia system screen has a plastic plug, ventilation deflectors with classic "sliders", an analog instrument panel, and a plastic steering wheel. This is partly offset by the engine start button and electric window lifts. The base versions weigh extremely little by today's standards - from 980 kilograms. It was possible to eliminate this only with the use of additional options. These included a multimedia system with a 9-inch screen, adaptive "cruise" with automatic braking function, "digital" instrument panel, although with separate screens for the speedometer and fuel gauge. 16- and 17-inch wheels are standard for this crossover.
