The car was created on the platform from the "three" E36, but in a modified version, with a reduced distance between the axles. Part of the suspension components was taken from the 3rd series of the previous generation. There were two versions available - a convertible and a coupe. In the latter case, the presence of a hardtop resulted in a 2.7-fold increase in body stiffness in torsion and bending. Another feature of the coupe was the design of its body, the characteristic shape of which became the source of criticism, with critics calling this car a "clown shoe" and a "bread van".

The engine range varied greatly depending on the version. Initially, only the convertible was available, which was equipped exclusively with in-line four-cylinder gasoline engines. The six-cylinder engines were introduced to the roadster only six months after its premiere. Production of the coupe began in January 1998. The more rigid body allowed the use of the most powerful engines - in-line six-cylinder engines with a volume of 2.8 and 3 liters developed from 190 to 230 horsepower. Initially, they were combined with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission, but later, with the release of the coupe, the automatic transmission was replaced with a more modern 5-speed one. The standard equipment of this roadster included wheels and tires with a diameter of 15 to 17 inches.
