The BMW Z3 is a line of two-seat sports cars that was introduced in 1995. After being discontinued in 2002, the car was succeeded by the Z4 model.

    History of creation

The development of the car began in 1991. The first prototypes were released in mid-1992. Initially, it was planned to produce only a roadster version of the model, but in 1997, the German manufacturer introduced a coupe version. Its development was carried out by the company's engineers in their free time. The coupe differs not only in the presence of a roof, but also in a number of changes to the body structure, which allowed its torsional rigidity to be increased by more than 2.7 times.

    Main features

The car, which debuted in 1991, was created on the platform of the BMW "third" series in the E36 body, and the most compact version of it was used, which differed in a shorter wheelbase. Another borrowing was the suspension. In the front, components from the same "triple" E36 were used, and the rear with longitudinal levers was taken from its predecessor in the E30 body. At the time of its launch, the car was equipped exclusively with in-line "fours" with a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 114 hp. More powerful engines with 6 cylinders appeared later, in 1996. It is worth noting that the standard equipment did not include a removable hard top, which was only available in the list of additional equipment.

In 1998, the lineup was expanded with coupe modifications. Their unusual silhouette caused a flurry of criticism and joking nicknames. In particular, the car was called a "bread van" and a "clown shoe". But at the same time, its versions were more powerful than the roadster, since the coupe body was much stiffer and allowed with minimal modifications to install power units, starting with a gasoline in-line "six" M52 with a power of 190 hp. In turn, the most "charged" versions of the M received engines S52/S54, developing from 240 to 315 hp. The power units worked in pair with 5-speed manual gearboxes from ZF and Getrag, or with 4- and 5-range "automatics" developed by General Motors, which was largely due to the place of production. The model was first produced outside of Germany, in the USA. For obvious reasons, the car did not become popular among compatriots, nevertheless, some of its instances found their way to our country. Tires and wheels for them can be found in the catalog of the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
