The BMW X5 M crossover debuted in the German brand's lineup in the spring of 2009, representing a "charged" version of the car with the same index. Its appearance was due to the presence of models with a similar concept from other German brands.

First Generation

This crossover turned out to be iconic for the brand, as it was the first all-wheel drive M-line model. Like other representatives of this line, it differed from the standard X5 primarily in its power unit. This was a V-shaped gasoline "eight" with a volume of 4.4 liters and a turbocharger, which produced 547 hp and 680 Nm at peak loads. Almost all traction was available, hardly not from idle speed - in the range from 1500 to 5650 rpm. With this power unit, the crossover accelerated to "hundred" in 4 seconds. The chassis was also modified accordingly. Already in the standard equipment, there was an "active" chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers.

Second Generation

The crossover of the next generation appeared only in 2015, almost two years after the previous model was discontinued. This was due to the presence in the lineup of the standard X5 xDrive50i version with a power unit from the M-modification of the predecessor. Its modified version appeared under the hood of the new "charged" version, producing 567 hp and 750 Nm, making this engine the most powerful gasoline engine of the German brand at that time. However, the crossover turned out to be slightly slower than its predecessor, taking only 4.2 seconds to reach the first "hundred". This was due, first of all, to the much more extensive equipment, which made the car noticeably heavier, but at the same time much more popular.

Third Generation

The good sales of the predecessor led to the release of the next generation almost immediately with the debut of the standard crossover in the same 2019. This time, most of the components were "borrowed" from the M5 and M8 sedans. But, in essence, this was the same "combination" of a 4.4-liter V8 gasoline engine and the M xDrive all-wheel drive system, to which an 8-speed "automatic" was added, along with an electronically controlled differential. The crossover differed from the sedans only in the settings of the active chassis and the absence of a drift mode with forced disconnection of the front axle drive. Compared to the predecessor, the installed engine was slightly more powerful, producing 600 hp and 750 Nm. An important difference was the presence of a large number of additional struts in the engine compartment and an active stabilizer of transverse stability on the rear axle.

Externally, the crossover differed from the standard version with more aggressive bumpers, rearview mirrors with a double mount imitation, an enlarged spoiler on the rear door, and double exhaust pipes. In the cabin, all changes were reduced to a sports steering wheel, buttons for activating M-modes of engine operation, transmission, as well as front seats with more pronounced lateral support.

In 2023, an updated version of the crossover appeared. External changes were limited to a partial revision of the front design and rear lights. There were many more differences from the predecessor in the cabin, where a different front panel appeared. The electronic systems underwent significant modernization. In technical terms, the key innovation was the appearance of a "hybrid" addition to the power unit. An electric motor was integrated into the transmission, which produced up to 12 hp and 200 Nm of torque at peak loads, helping when starting from a standstill and the first seconds of acceleration, as well as starting the main power unit. A additional 48-volt battery is used to power it, located in the engine compartment. The 4.4-liter V8 engine also underwent modernization, with new turbochargers, crankshafts, and intake and exhaust systems. However, the update did not lead to an increase in power indicators. The "automatic" transmission also underwent modernization, with changed gear ratios and settings, thanks to which gear shifts take less time. The crossover turned out to be slower than its predecessor. And the already heavy car became even more massive due to the presence of a "hybrid" add-on and an expanded list of equipment, its weight was 2370 kg in the equipped state. The standard wheels with a mounting diameter of 21 inches in front and 22 inches in the rear played a significant role in this. This and other products are presented in the online store "Mosavtoshina".
