The BMW X5 is a mid-size crossover. It has been produced since 1999. It is positioned by the manufacturer as a sports car, differing not so much in its capabilities off the road, but in its handling and stability at high speeds. At the time of its debut, the main competitor to the model was the M-Class from Mercedes-Benz, which had a frame chassis. In turn, the X5 offered a different concept, which was later adopted by other participants in the German "triple".

Creation History

The purchase of Land Rover in 1994 was largely due to BMW's desire to enter the off-road segment. The technologies obtained as a result of this significantly reduced the development time of its own crossover with the E53 index, presented in 1999, which had a large number of systems and components from the Range Rover, in particular, hill descent control, a 2-section rear door. Another "donor" was the 5th series passenger car in the E39 body. But, unlike most competitors, the BMW off-road vehicle was created as a sports car for asphalt. This explains the settings of the all-wheel drive system, which directed 62% of the traction to the rear axle, allowing the crossover's driving behavior to be maximally approximated to the rear-wheel drive sedans of the German brand. Another solution of the same type was the engine range, composed of in-line "sixes" and V8s with a volume of 2.9 to 4.8 liters with a power of 181 to 355 hp.

Model E70

In July 2006, the manufacturer presented the second-generation car. It turned out to be significantly larger than its predecessor, greatly increasing the wheelbase and width, which had a positive effect on the spaciousness of the salon and luggage compartment. In technical terms, the crossover continued the evolutionary changes of its predecessor. A front suspension with double wishbones appeared, a steering system with a variable gear ratio, and electronic control of the stabilizers of transverse stability. In addition, the car already in the standard configuration received the iDrive system, which allows you to control the main systems using a joystick on the central panel.

Model F15

The crossover of the third iteration debuted in the spring of 2013. Constructively, it represents a deep modernization of the previous model, sharing with it both the platform and most of the mechanical components. The main difference is the body, in which there is not a single common part. Another innovation was the salon, which retained the previous location of the controls, but at the same time changed significantly, mainly due to the materials of the trim. In technical terms, the most notable difference was the appearance of a large number of various electronic systems that increase safety and the level of comfort for the driver and passengers. The engine range consists of power units, both from the predecessor and from other passenger cars of the German brand. It consists of two petrol and two diesel engines. All engines are equipped with a turbocharger and work in pair with an automatic 8-speed gearbox from ZF.

Model G05

The announcement of the fourth-generation model took place in the summer of 2018. This time it was a new car based on a different platform - CLAR, with a cluster architecture. It is also used in the 5th and 7th series, with which the crossover shares most of the mechanical components. First of all, the rear 5-link suspension, all-wheel steering, and electronically controlled pneumatic chassis. The engine range has also changed significantly. "Basic" became a petrol and diesel 4-cylinder engines with a volume of 2 liters with a power of 261 and 248 hp, respectively. At the same time, versions with petrol V8 engines with a volume of 4.4 liters, developing 456 hp, were preserved in the line.
