The BMW 1 Series is a line of compact luxury cars in the C segment, produced since 2004. The German manufacturer classifies this car as an entry-level model.

First Generation

The concept of a compact car with sporty handling emerged after BMW acquired the British company Rover, which at that time was developing the R30 model. However, it was decided to use components from other models of the German brand, primarily the 3 Series, which "shared" the suspension, layout, engines, transmission, and electronic systems. In the fall of 2004, the car premiered - a 5-door hatchback with a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Over the next few years, the lineup expanded to include a coupe and a 3-door hatchback. In 2007, the car underwent a facelift, which included a new inline "four" N43, an electric power steering, as well as changed bumpers and interior. Similar innovations occurred in 2010, when the brand presented another update to the model.

Second Generation

In 2011, the manufacturer presented a car of the next generation. The difference from the predecessor was that the coupe and convertible were separated into a separate line, becoming the 2 Series. The remaining 3- and 5-door hatchbacks were equipped with engines from the previous generation, modernized to meet current environmental standards. The engine range changed significantly in 2015, when new 3-cylinder turbocharged gasoline and diesel engines with very modest fuel consumption were included. Another important innovation was the appearance of all-wheel drive versions, which, along with other components, were "borrowed" from the 3 Series.

Third Generation

The third-generation car debuted in 2019. This was an entirely new model, created on the modular UKL2 platform. A significant part of the parts was borrowed from the 2 Series coupe - front fenders, hood, dashboard, suspension. Compared to its predecessor, the car became shorter, wider, and taller. In addition, the layout changed - the model received front-wheel drive, thanks to which there was more space in the front leg area, as well as above the heads of rear passengers. The trunk volume increased to average sizes for the C segment - 380 liters. In turn, the more widespread use of aluminum allowed to reduce the weight by 30 kg. The engine range includes gasoline engines with a particulate filter, and diesel engines, in addition to it, are equipped with a selective catalytic reduction system, which allowed the power units to "fit" into the Euro-6 environmental standard requirements.
