The car of the next generation appeared in the fall of 2020, almost a year after the debut of the standard coupe of the 4th series of the second generation. External differences from it were the characteristic M-model extended wheel arches, a front bumper with an aggressively designed front bumper with enlarged air intakes, a rear diffuser with double exhaust pipes at the edges, and a minimum amount of chrome-plated decor. As with its predecessor, the roof was made of composites, but with the possibility of replacing them with transparent glass for an additional fee. There were fewer differences from the "standard" in the salon, which was distinguished by a steering wheel with red paddles for selecting driving modes and a start button, as well as sports seats, for which lighter versions with a weight reduction of 9.5 kg with a base made of composite materials were available for an additional fee.

The use of a new platform led to an increase in the car's dimensions and weight by more than 100 kg. This was partially offset by the use of a more powerful engine - an in-line gasoline "six" with a volume of 3 liters with two superchargers, borrowed from the X4 M crossover. Under peak loads, this power unit produces 480 horsepower and 650 Nm. It can still be combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed "automatic". The drive is exclusively rear-wheel drive for all versions. The chassis retained the layout of the standard coupe, but received a fairly large package of upgrades. In particular, other subframes, additional struts, and a track widened by 38 mm appeared. In the standard configuration, this set is supplemented by an adjustable driver stabilization system and an M-version of the steering with a variable gear ratio. The M Drive Professional package is available as an option, which allows for more subtle tuning of the stabilization system, choosing from 10 preset modes. The next distinctive feature of the car is the wheels. 18-inch wheels are used at the front, and 19-inch wheels are used at the rear.
