The BMW X3 M debuted in the German brand's production range in early 2019. Like other models with the letter M in their name, the car was a "charged" version of the X3 crossover, differing from it with much better dynamics and even more pronounced sporty handling.

Initial Version

The car, although created on the basis of the standard version of the X3 crossover of the third generation of 2017, uses a significant number of components from the M-version of the 3-series sedan. First of all, this is the engine - an in-line gasoline "six" with two turbochargers with a volume of 3 liters, which has undergone significant modernization. Compared to its predecessor, it is distinguished by a more productive fuel injection system, cooling and lubrication, and its cylinder head is made using a 3D printer, which reduced the weight of the part and allowed changing the configuration and location of the cooling system channels. The two single-scroll turbochargers work not sequentially, but in parallel, serving their "own" three cylinders. The base version of this power unit produces up to 480 horsepower and 600 Nm, and the more sports-oriented Competition - up to 510 horsepower with the same torque, but it is available in a slightly wider range of revolutions, which ends at 5950 rpm. In both versions, the engine is combined only with an 8-speed "automatic", which has a real manual mode that does not allow switching up the gears even at maximum crankshaft speeds. Another difference from the standard version of the crossover is the all-wheel drive system xDrive, also with specific features. It lacks a drift mode, which is replaced by a preset with increased torque delivery to the rear axle, on which an active differential is already present in the standard equipment, along with a modified suspension with adaptive shock absorbers and a steering mechanism with a variable gear ratio.

Visually, the crossover was almost indistinguishable from the rest of the lineup, differing only in plastic trim. The salon was also refined in a similar way, where there were seats with increased lateral support, an M-joystick for controlling the transmission, and a steering wheel with buttons for activating M-modes.

Updated Version

In the summer of 2021, sales of the updated version of the "charged" crossover started. Externally, the car differed from its predecessor with an even more aggressive design of the bumpers, where black vertical sections appeared. The salon changed much more, being brought in line with the style of the new models of the German brand. In particular, a 10.25-inch instrument panel display appeared, and the climate control became 3-zone, receiving a more compact control unit. The touch screen located above the front console increased in size to 12.3 inches diagonally, and the functionality of the multimedia system was expanded.

In technical terms, the car was distinguished by the presence in the lineup of only the most "angry" version of Competition, which received a modified engine of the same power, but with increased torque of up to 650 Nm.
