As a result, the creation of the "penny" was carried out in parallel with the development of the 3rd series in the E90 body. Modernizations

In March 2007, the car underwent its first modernization. Within its framework, minor changes were made to the exterior. In turn, the engine range lost the N45 and N46 engines, which were replaced by a new aluminum inline-4 N43 engine in two versions - 1.6 and 2 liters with improved fuel efficiency. Another innovation was the replacement of the classic hydraulic power steering with a similar unit with an electric motor.

In 2011, the brand presented updated coupes and convertibles. The changes affected the design of the headlights, rear lights, both bumpers, and interior. The 135i modification replaced the N54 engine with the N55, which differed in the use of one turbocharger instead of two in the predecessor, but differed in a more technological design and the presence of the Valvetronic valve lift control system, as well as updated fuel injectors.
