Second Generation

In 2009, the German brand presented a car of the second generation. It differed from its predecessor by a folding roof and the absence of a "coupe" body version in the lineup. Technically, the roadster was related to the 1st and 3rd series, sharing with them the L2 platform and most of the mechanical components, differing from them by a rather specific line of engines. The base versions were equipped with a turbocharged "four" engine with a volume of 2 liters and a power of 154 hp. However, the "real" Z4 started, as before, with in-line "sixes" with a volume of 2.5 and 3 liters, which developed up to 335 hp. In terms of equipment, the car largely repeated the 3rd series. The base versions offered a regenerative braking system, electric power steering, an electromechanical "handbrake", a "start-stop" system, adaptive headlights, electronically controlled suspension, along with the iDrive multimedia system.

Third Generation

The car of the next generation debuted in 2018, two years after the end of production of the previous model. It again became a full-fledged roadster, losing the hard folding top. The car's dimensions have increased significantly, adding in all directions. However, the distance between the axles was 26 mm less, which is due to the disproportion in the external appearance, especially in the side projection. Technically, the car is related to the Toyota Supra of the fifth generation, sharing with it a platform developed jointly by the two automakers. The feature of this "cart" is not only a small distance between the axles but also a low center of gravity, a wide track, and an increased proportion of high-strength steel in the body frame. The engine lineup consists of three petrol engines with turbocharging. The base version is equipped with an in-line "four" engine with a volume of 2 liters, developing 197 hp and 320 Nm. With this engine, the car accelerates to "hundred" in just 6.6 seconds. The "middle" version with the same engine, but with a power of 258 hp and a torque of 400 Nm, performs the same exercise in 5.4 seconds. The most dynamic versions offer a 3-liter engine, developing 340 hp and 500 Nm, which allows acceleration to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds. All power units work in tandem with an 8-speed hydro-mechanical "automatic".

Already in the standard equipment, the car has a steering system with a variable gear ratio, LED headlights and rear lights, an adaptive "cruise" with a lane-keeping function and automatic braking, and a roof painted black. It opens and closes in just 10 seconds. The volume of the luggage compartment remains unchanged, amounting to 281 liters. Another difference of the base versions is the upholstery made of natural leather, which in the most expensive versions of the configuration becomes combined due to the addition of Alcantara.
