The BMW 5 Series in the E60/E61 body was produced from 2004 to 2010, being a line of luxury cars consisting of a sedan and a wagon. Development began in 1997 and took about 5 years. The final design was approved in 2000 and was created under the direction of Chris Bangle.

Initial Version

The car was released in the summer of 2003. At the start of sales, it was only available in a sedan body. The wagon was added later, at the end of 2004. It differed from its predecessor by a wide range of various electronic systems, as well as the presence in the engine range of turbocharged gasoline engines and a 6-speed automatic transmission with a brake energy recovery function. Both versions provide a weight distribution between the axles in a 50:50 ratio. To achieve this, the body panels in the front part had to be made of aluminum, and the central and rear parts - of steel. The interior featured a new infotainment system iDrive, which was previously used only in the flagship 7 Series. In the standard configuration, it was equipped with a 6.5-inch display, voice control, CD player, and a function to change the operation of some car systems. Additionally, the E60 already had an active cruise control, bi-xenon headlights, active stabilizers for transverse stability, a projection display, and a steering system with a variable gear ratio in the base version.

Engine Range

At the time of the car's launch into mass production, it was equipped with an in-line 6-cylinder M54 gasoline engine, inherited from its predecessor. This engine became the "base" for the entire line. The novelty of the engine range was the V-shaped 8-cylinder power unit N62. In 2005, the "base" engine M54 was replaced by a more economical 4-cylinder N43, which was installed in the 520i modification. In 2007, a turbocharged engine with the index E60 was included in the line for the first time. The "diesel" part of the engine range at the time of the car's launch into the series started with the 530d version, in which an updated 6-cylinder M57 was used. In 2004, it received a turbocharger, such an engine was used in various forced versions in 525d and 535d. In 2005, a 4-cylinder M47 appeared in the line, becoming the "base" for the 5 Series until 2007, when the "five" received a new engine with the index N47.
