In 2014, the manufacturer introduced the second-generation crossover. The car was created on the L4 platform of its own design, like the previously introduced X5, slightly increasing in size and already available with 5 seats from the start of sales. Another sign of the change in concept was the standard chassis, which provided a smoother ride compared to its predecessor. At the same time, the possibility of purchasing a sports car was preserved due to additional equipment, which included special packages with a more rigid suspension and engines with increased power. The exceptions were the xDrive 50i and the charged M version, which were equipped with V8 engines with twin turbocharging and a volume of 4.4 liters, which became significantly more powerful and traction-rich than their predecessors.

In the summer of 2019, the third-generation crossover debuted. The car has once again undergone significant changes in its exterior, which has become even more aggressive than before, while maintaining its similarity to the X5, mainly due to the headlights. In technical terms, the crossover was distinguished by the use of the CLAR platform, thanks to which it has again slightly increased in size, becoming 26 mm longer and 15 mm wider. The increased rear overhang provided a decent volume of the luggage compartment for this class - 580 liters behind the curtain and 1530 liters with the second-row seats folded. Another important difference from its predecessor was the panoramic roof, which was available in the standard equipment and became 83% larger. No less important change was the engine range. With the exception of two petrol V8 engines with twin turbocharging and a volume of 4.4 liters, it turned out to be new. The "base" engines are inline turbocharged petrol and diesel "fours" with a volume of 2 liters. The most popular versions are equipped with a 3-liter 6-cylinder B57/B58 engine in several versions, including its most "advanced" version on diesel fuel with four turbochargers. All power units work in "pair" with an 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF. Despite some adjustment of the original concept, the car remained sports-oriented with a rather non-trivial handling and dynamics, requiring an extremely careful approach to choosing tires and wheels for it.
