The BMW 8-series currently represents a line of sports coupes and convertibles in the Grand Tourer category. The car was produced from 1990 to 1999, after which it was resumed only in 2018.

First generation

The car was developed starting from 1981, but its launch into mass production was postponed due to the good sales of the 6th series. The debut of the large coupe took place only in the fall of 1989. The implementation of the project cost the German brand $900 million. Moreover, most of the work was done in "digital" and in the wind tunnel. This largely ensured extremely low air resistance indicators - 0.29. The absence of a central pillar aggravated the situation. Nevertheless, the car lasted in mass production until 1999, but did not receive a direct successor.

Second generation

The return of the large coupe to the German brand's model range took place in the summer of 2018. In the fall of the same year, the line was supplemented with a convertible with a fabric roof, which folds in 15 seconds. Another difference from the two other versions was the reinforcing elements located in the trunk, under the hood and on the bottom, as well as aluminum safety arches. This increased the car's weight by 100 kg. In the fall of 2019, a 4-door sedan with a coupe-like roofline and a wheelbase increased by 201 mm debuted. All modifications are created on the modular CLAR platform, which it shares with the 7th series and X5/X6/X7 crossovers, along with the chassis layout with double wishbones at the front and a "multi-link" at the rear. An important difference was the use of carbon fiber in it, which reduced the magnitude of the unsprung masses. The engine range consists of two petrol engines and one diesel - an in-line "six" with a volume of 3 liters with one turbocharger and a V8 with a double turbocharger with a volume of 4.4 liters with several degrees of boosting. All power units work in "pair" with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which uses data from the satellite navigation system to predict gear shifts.
