The BMW 7 (E38) is a full-size luxury sedan. It was produced from 1994 to 2001, being the third generation of one of the most popular models of the German brand and the last one to have a manual transmission available.

History and design features

The development of the car began in 1988 and continued until 1991, when the brand's management finally approved the project. One of the prototypes was taken as the basis, which with minimal changes, caused solely by technological limitations, was launched into mass production. The car was distinguished by lowered hood and trunk lid lines, an aggressive angle of inclination of the front and rear windows, which made it possible to reduce the drag coefficient to 0.3, reducing noise and fuel consumption at the same time. Another feature was the widespread use of high-strength steel, which increased the body's rigidity and reduced vibrations, as well as reduced the car's weight.

Engine range

Already in the first years of sales, the sedan was offered with a wide range of engines, consisting of in-line 6-cylinder and V8 engines. All power units were located longitudinally and worked in pair with 5-speed manual or 5- and 6-speed automatic transmissions. The drive is exclusively rear-wheel, which at that time was part of the brand's "signature" layout. The "base" version was the 728i with an in-line "six" M52 with a power of 193 hp, well known to owners of top modifications of the 3rd and 5th series models. Further in the "table of ranks" were the 730i and 740i, which had 3- and 4-liter V8s. This was two options for the same "aluminum" engine with a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees. As part of the 1996 update, it was replaced by its modified version with VANOS and an increased working volume. Top modifications with the 750i index were equipped with a 12-cylinder M73, a modified version of the engine developed after the end of World War II and used in the previous generation model, differing in an increased working volume of up to 5.4 liters and a wide use of aluminum.

The "diesel" part started with an in-line "six" M51, which was installed on the 725tds and also used on the Opel Omega B. The 730d version had a new engine at that time, the M57 with a turbocharger and a cast-iron cylinder head and block, being more powerful than the "base" version by more than a third. Another new engine at that time was installed in the 740d - a V8 with a volume of 3.9 liters and a power of 245 hp with two turbochargers and an accumulator injection system.

Equipment

Already in the standard version of the equipment, the car, like a flagship model, had a very large amount of equipment. A significant part of it was electronic systems that ensured driving safety. They started with an anti-slip system and traction control, and ended with xenon headlights with automatic adjustment of the light flow. Part of the electronics was used to control the shock absorbers and control the distance to objects when parking. Comfort was provided by 2- and 3-zone climate control, a sunroof, wipers with "rain" sensors, electric seat and steering wheel adjustment. In addition, as an option, double glazing and laminated coating of the windshield were offered.
