The E46 index denotes the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series, a compact executive car in the C segment. It was produced from 1997 to 2006, being the successor to the iconic E36.

History of creation

The development of the E46 model began in 1993. At the same time, work on the exterior was carried out at the European research and development center of the brand, and the interior was handled by the American company Designworks USA. The same company developed the design of the coupe and convertible in 1996.

Chassis

Compared to its predecessor, the E36, the body of this car turned out to be 70% stiffer, which, however, did not result in a reduction in mass. At the same time, aluminum components were widely used in the suspension of this model, but their number became significantly larger than that of the predecessor. Another difference was the distribution of weight in an equal ratio along the axes, which, in combination with the classic rear-wheel drive, gave a significant increase in traction and handling. The use of a different platform also made it possible to return the all-wheel drive transmission to the lineup, which had been missing from the 3 Series since 1991.

Electronics

Another feature of the car was the deeper integration of various electronic systems into mechanical components, thereby increasing their number. To a significant extent, this was implemented through the CAN bus, through which information about the engine, transmission, and stability control system was transmitted. In turn, the operation of the entertainment systems and navigation was organized through the K-bus. It is also worth noting the first use in the brand's cars of engines with the Valvetronic variable valve lift system, which was achieved through the use of the CAN bus.

Engine range

Throughout the entire production period, the car was equipped with a large number of engines. The "base" engines were inline 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines with a volume of 1.6 to 2 liters and a power of 103 to 150 hp. The most dynamic modifications were also equipped with inline "sixes" with a volume of 2 to 3.2 liters and a power of 150 to 355 hp. The "base" power units were combined with 5-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Powerful versions, on which engines with a volume of 3 liters were installed, were equipped with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a robotic SMG transmission. In all-wheel drive modifications, a transfer case with an interaxle differential was added to these components, which distributed the torque in a ratio of 38/62. In the "charged" version of the M3, it was supplemented with a self-locking differential on the rear axle. After a fairly long time has passed since the model was discontinued, it still often appears on domestic roads.
