The Audi S6 is one of the variants of the A6 passenger car, featuring high dynamic characteristics and sporty handling. It has been produced since 1994. In the model range of the German manufacturer, it is positioned between the standard A6 and the even more sporty RS6.
Model Type 4A
The history of the car began with the restructuring of the model range, which the German brand was engaged in throughout most of the 1990s. At that time, it was selling a sedan with the index 100 of the fifth generation. Wanting to keep a sports car with this type of body in the model range, the company's management did not come up with anything better than to make minor changes to the already existing S4, essentially changing the digit 4 to 6 in the index. It was distinguished, first of all, by the power unit - an in-line five-cylinder gasoline engine with a turbocharger, volume of 2.2 liters, producing 230 horsepower and 326 Nm of torque, available from 1950 rpm. With this engine, the car accelerated to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. This was largely due to the Torsen T-1 Quattro all-wheel drive system. Later, the manufacturer released an even more powerful 290-horsepower modification with a 4.2-liter V8.
Model Type 4B
The next generation of the car, presented in 1999, was created on the basis of the standard A6, using the C5 platform developed by Volkswagen. It was available in two body types - sedan and wagon. Both versions used a new 4.2-liter aluminum V8 gasoline engine with a cylinder bank angle of 90 degrees, producing 340 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque. The transmission was represented by a 6-speed manual or a 5-speed "automatic" Tiptronic, as well as the Quattro all-wheel drive system. Moreover, both the front and rear used an electronic differential lock, which was made possible by the installation of ABS+ESP from Bosch. The chassis received other shock absorbers and springs with sporty settings, reducing the ground clearance by 10 mm. Externally, such a car differed from the standard A6 by expanded wheel arches and sills, as well as a hood and front wings made of aluminum.
Model Type 4F
In 2006, the German brand presented an updated version of the sports model, which received an aluminum 5.2-liter V10 gasoline engine FSI, created on the basis of the 4.2-liter V8. Its power was 435 horsepower, and the torque was 540 Nm. The only available transmission was a 6-speed "automatic" Tiptronic with shift paddles on the steering wheel. Another component of the standard equipment was the Quattro all-wheel drive system, which initially had a symmetrical T-1 differential, and from 2008 - T-3, which could vary the torque distribution between the axes in a wider range.
Model Type 4G
The next generation of the car was presented in 2012, almost a year after the debut of the A6 with the C7 index. As a power unit, a 4-liter V8 engine with two turbochargers was used, which produced 420 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. At the same time, the engine had a system for disconnecting half of the cylinders during uniform movement with a low load and a "start-stop" system. In later released modifications, this engine produced 450 horsepower. Another innovation was the 7-speed robotic gearbox with a double clutch S-Tronic.
Model Type 4K
In 2018, a sports model was presented, created on the basis of the eighth-generation A6. Compared to its predecessor, the car differed primarily in the engine. This was a 2.9-liter V6 gasoline engine of the same power, which was supplemented by a traction starter-generator that directed up to 9.4 horsepower to the wheels. With this power unit, the car accelerated to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. A year later, the manufacturer presented the first diesel modification in the model's history, with a 3-liter V6, which significantly inferior to the gasoline analogue in power, using the same combination of an electric turbocharger and a mechanical compressor, producing "only" 344 horsepower. However, it significantly surpassed it in terms of torque, which reached 700 Nm. Nevertheless, this did not help the car become as fast. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, but consumed much less fuel.
