The Audi A6 is a family of compact executive cars. The debut model was the Audi 100, presented in 1968. In August 1994, the fifth generation of this car was released, simultaneously with the renaming of the model range, which became known as the A6. The car was offered with a sedan and station wagon body, the latter having its own name, Avant. Both versions were available in two sports modifications - S6 and RS6. The latter used the abbreviation, which denoted RennSport, the German translation of the English phrase Racing Sport.

First Generation

The A6 of the first generation, presented in 1994, was essentially an Audi 100 with new front and rear lights, a radiator grille, as well as a wider range of engines. It featured 4-cylinder inline petrol engines with a volume of 1.8 and 2 liters, 2.6 and 2.8 liter V6, as well as diesel power units - a 1.9 liter "four" and an inline 5-cylinder with a volume of 2.5 liters. Most engines were combined with the proprietary all-wheel drive system Quattro, created on the basis of the Torsen transmission.

Second Generation

In March 1997, the A6 of the second generation was shown. This time it was a truly new car, created on the C5 platform from the Volkswagen Group. The significantly modified sedan body had a drag coefficient even lower than that of its predecessor - 0.28. In addition, as an alternative to the manual transmission, a 5-speed "automatic" Tiptronic was offered. The range of engines sold in North America has changed significantly. It included a 2.8 liter V6 with 30 valves and a 250-horsepower V6 Biturbo "borrowed" from the S4, as well as a 4.2 liter V8 with a power of 300 horsepower. The engine range for European versions of the A6 underwent changes in 2002, when the model underwent a facelift with new headlights, a radiator grille, body moldings, and open exhaust pipes. The range of engines lost petrol engines with a volume of 1.8 and 2.8 liters, which were replaced by more powerful engines with a volume of 2 and 3 liters, respectively. With the exception of the 4.2 liter V8, all power units were modified, adding a small number of "horses". In addition to the Tiptronic "automatic", a continuously variable Multitronic variator was offered, which was equipped with front-wheel drive versions. Another innovation was the appearance of the Avant station wagon version with an increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive Quattro, which became the first crossover in Audi's history.

Further Development

The third generation Audi A6 was released in 2004. The development of the car was carried out by Satoshi Wada, who preserved the visual similarity with the predecessors, but was able to give this model a corporate style that still exists today. In this generation, the MMI system was introduced, a system for controlling car settings, entertainment, navigation through the screen on the torpedo, which allowed minimizing the number of buttons and switches. The engine range included FSI engines with direct injection technology, which are also used in the fourth generation. In it, the A6 acquired details and components from older models - A7 and A8, "borrowing" from these models a modular platform and part of the interior.
