More than a century of the manufacturer's history began in 1913, when Karl Rapp founded an aircraft engine manufacturing company. Just four years later, the name Bayerische Motoren Werke was officially registered, which has been preserved to this day. After the end of World War I, Germany was banned from building aircraft, so the company's activities were redirected to the production of agricultural machinery and some household items. Along with this, the manufacturer began to produce motorcycles. And only in 1928, the first car under the BMW brand was born. It was the Dixi model.

Starting from 1933, the company resumed its activities in the development and production of aircraft engines. At the same time, the sphere of automobile construction was not abandoned. It was during this period that the famous BMW 328 appeared. Further development was associated with military needs, in particular, rocket building. Notably, at the state's initiative, in 1940, Fritz Hille took over as the head of the major manufacturer.

This period is fully associated with military needs. The company's engineers actively worked on improving aircraft engines and developing new systems, including tactical missiles and guided weapons. On this path, they achieved significant heights, creating many interesting systems. Notably, many of them were not in demand until almost the end of the war. Post-War Years

After Germany's defeat, some of BMW's factories were blown up, and the remaining equipment was dismantled. Such measures by the USSR and its allies were motivated by the fear of using the company's technical capabilities by the remnants of Germany's allies. Therefore, the state of the German manufacturer was quite deplorable. During this period, the production of affordable motorcycles was gradually established, which saved the situation. And only in 1951, the first post-war car - the 501 model - appeared, followed by the compact Isetta (developed by Italian engineers, which was acquired by BMW). The main direction of activity during this period was the production of affordable vehicles on a large scale. And this policy yielded results, allowing the company to regain its position.

Rapid Development Stage

Starting from the 1970s, the company began to actively grow, developing and producing new models of cars and motorcycles. To this end, new factory areas were opened, and work was carried out to modernize the existing ones. In 1980, the first foreign factory was opened in Austria. Along with success, the manufacturer faced competition from Japanese companies. At the initial stage, this affected the motorcycle sector, and then the automotive sector. The main braking factor for BMW at that time was the high cost of labor.

A significant stage in development was the opening of a factory in the United States, which happened in 1994. In addition, the Rover company was acquired. Notably, this deal brought only losses, and not insignificant ones. The most significant year was 2003 - the Rolls-Royce brand was acquired, and cooperation with a Chinese company began, on the basis of which BMW Brilliance Automotive was created. Annually, it produces 700,000 cars, and in 2022, a new factory was opened, which specializes exclusively in electric vehicles.
