The Mercedes G-Class with the W463 index is the second generation of one of the most popular off-road vehicles of the German brand. It was produced from 1990 to 2018.Features
The off-road vehicle presented in 1990 significantly differed from its predecessor. First of all, the concept, which translated this model from the segment of utility vehicles to the "luxury" category, where the Range Rover was popular. As a result, the off-road vehicle lost 3-door modifications with a short wheelbase, which remained available only for the W461 model, the production of which continued in parallel.Externally, the car differed with a redesigned front part, which received rounded corners of the body panels. At the same time, the fender extensions were painted in the body color, and the radiator grille became narrower, freeing up space for the license plate. The front bumper repeated the curves of the body, and the rear one received red lights and white lights for backlighting when moving backwards. The fuel tank was hidden under the body panels, and the side steps became part of the standard equipment. There were even more changes in the interior, where elements and trim materials from the S-Class passenger car appeared. The instrument panel acquired a "civilian" design and contained a climate control panel. The seats had softer filling and were distinguished by the presence of lumbar support. In 2000, the off-road vehicle received a new salon with different upholstery and a multimedia system Command.
Engine range
The engine lineup was also a distinctive feature of this model. It had the widest engine range ever available for this off-road vehicle over its three decades of production - from 4 to 12 cylinders, "atmospheric", with a mechanical supercharger, with single and double turbocharging. However, in the first few years of production, the car was offered with only four of them - petrol M102 with a volume of 2.3 and M103 with a volume of 3 liters, as well as two diesel OM602 with a volume of 2.5 and OM603 with a volume of 2.7 liters. As part of the first modernization in 1992, the car received a new diesel engine with turbocharging with a volume of 2.9 liters, and a year later the brand introduced an off-road vehicle with a 5-liter V8 with a power of 241 horsepower. In 1997, the in-line "six" M104 was replaced by the V6 M112, which became one of the most common engines for this model. In 2000, the manufacturer began to equip the off-road vehicle with more powerful diesel engines. The first was the OM628 for the G400 version, which was equipped with a Common Rail system and provided the heavy off-road vehicle with excellent dynamics, and on rough terrain allowed it to confidently overcome even the most difficult sections. Despite the fairly advanced age, most of the specimens of this model are still on the move and are popular in the secondary market.
