Debuting in 2014, the Mercedes AMG GT became a landmark for the German brand, as it was the first model to be fully developed by the AMG division without relying on Mercedes-Benz's series production cars. In its concept, it was a classic "gran turismo" in a modern interpretation, using high technology.

First Generation


In 2014, the line of sports cars - coupe and roadster - debuted. Both options stood out with a rare layout for sports cars, with a longitudinally-mounted engine at the front. The transmission was located near the rear axle, providing a nearly ideal weight distribution, giving the car a close-to-neutral handling. The second important feature was the engine - a 4-liter V8 with two compressors, indexed M178. The power unit was distinguished by a V-shaped arrangement of turbines, which reduced the length of the intake tract and provided almost instantaneous reactions to accelerator pedal pressure. Its power, at the beginning of the production cycle and depending on the version, varied from 462 to 510 horsepower. Later, more powerful modifications of this engine appeared in the lineup.

In all versions, the car's body was almost entirely made of aluminum, and the stiffness of the structure was one of the key goals of the project. The suspension was a two-link front and multi-link rear, with adaptive shock absorbers and an electronically controlled rear differential. Compared to its predecessor, the SLS AMG, the car was more compact, and its center of mass was significantly lower. The settings of the chassis, engine, and transmission presented significantly higher requirements for the driver's skills, not forgiving most errors.

In 2017, the German brand presented an updated car. This was preceded by a fairly voluminous process of evolution of the first-generation machine, within which a large number of modifications appeared, many of which had an emphasis on manageability shifted to "sport". This was taken into account when creating the next-generation machine, where the top version was the R-indexed version - an extended track, active aerodynamic elements, a fully controlled chassis with more "rigid" settings and pivoting rear wheels. The engine, having undergone another modernization cycle, began to develop 585 horsepower.

Second Generation


The second-generation car had to wait until 2023. Against the background of its predecessor, it significantly differed in its changed concept. The new platform increased the dimensions, which made it possible to get a 4-seat salon. For the first time, most versions received a 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system in the "base", which significantly simplified management during acceleration. Under the hood, the 4-liter V8 of the predecessor remained, but after significant changes that allowed it to meet current environmental standards.

The key innovation was the appearance of a hybrid power unit, where the V8 worked in "pair" with an electric motor on the rear axle. All these changes significantly changed the handling character, bringing it closer to a modern "gran turismo" - stability at high speed, comfort during everyday use, with only partial preservation of the model's former aggression.
