Mercedes CL-Class was present in the model range of the German automaker from 1996 to 2015. The car belonged to the Grand Turismo category, representing a 2-door coupe, a line of models derived from the brand's flagship - the S-Class.First Generation
The car, which debuted in 1996, was created on a thoroughly modernized chassis from the brand's flagship model with the W140 index. It differed from the "original" not only in body type but also in the shorter distance between the wheel axles and the absence of a central pillar. This led to significant changes in the platform, allowing for a substantial increase in body rigidity on bending and torsion. The engine range started with a 4.2-liter V8 gasoline engine, producing 275 horsepower, with which the coupe accelerated to "hundred" in 7.9 seconds. The top versions were distinguished by the presence of V12 emblems on the body and a 7.3-liter engine of this configuration under the hood. However, the most popular versions were those with the "middle" engine with a volume of 5 liters with the M119 index, which even today is considered one of the best ever produced by the German brand. Compared to the "younger" 4.2-liter engine, it was distinguished by much higher performance, and in comparison with the V12, it had a significantly lower weight, which made it stand out for its ease of handling in turns.Second Generation
The car of the next generation was presented in 1998. The coupe continued to use the platform from the flagship sedan, but already of the current generation with the W220 index, again differing in the shorter distance between the wheel axles by 203 mm. Compared to its predecessor, it stood out for the body structure, where the power elements were made not only of high-strength steel but also, for example, door reinforcements, of magnesium alloy. The coupe's roof was aluminum, and the front fenders and trunk lid were made of composites. This allowed the center of mass to be placed significantly lower. An important feature of the body was its design, which was efficient in terms of aerodynamics, reducing the air resistance coefficient to 0.28.In terms of equipment, the coupe stood out for the presence of advanced electronic systems at the time. In particular, the adaptive cruise control was used for the first time in the world, functioning based on data received from radar. Another innovation was the bi-xenon headlights of the headlight. The standard equipment of the coupe included the active chassis Active Body Control, which leveled the body relative to the road surface during uneven accelerations and also allowed changing the clearance in three positions, automatically lowering the car when driving at high speed.
Third Generation
The car, which debuted in 2007, was the last coupe with this name. Like its predecessor, it did not have a central pillar and was based on the platform from the S-Class of the current generation with the W221 index. It turned out to be heavier than the sedan, with a weight of from 2045 kg, which was largely due to the use of the platform with the same distance between the wheel axles as the sedan. This had a positive effect on the comfort of the passengers of the two-seat sofa in the back, who got more legroom. In terms of equipment, the coupe almost completely repeated the original model, receiving, in particular, the adaptive cruise control Distronic Plus, which was capable of completely stopping the car, starting and accelerating to a set speed depending on the distance to the vehicle in front. Nevertheless, there were differences. First of all, this is the "night vision" system Active NightVision, which allows you to view the space in front of the car in poor lighting conditions.
