At that time, Mercedes-Benz did not have such an engine in its "arsenal", which had to be developed from scratch, and at the same time, changes were made to the front part, since the initial version was not designed for the installation of such a bulky power unit. The first prototype was ready only in the summer of 1990. A side effect was an increase in development costs by a quarter, which forced the manufacturer to increase the price of the S-Class, which limited its sales, since the main competitors, especially Japanese brands, cost 1.5 to 2 times cheaper. As a result, after a few years, Mercedes-Benz began to transition from "engineering" design to "market" design, and the W140 became the last true S-Class, carrying extremely elegant technical solutions.

Engine Lineup

New engines were being developed for the car. The "base" ones were the inline "sixes" with a volume of 2.8 to 3.2 liters of the M104 family. At the medium trim level, a gasoline V8 of the M119 series with a volume of 4.2 to 5 liters with an aluminum cylinder head, forged connecting rods, and pistons made of "winged" metal was used. The flagship was the S600 version with a 12-cylinder M120 engine, developing 408 horsepower, noticeably more powerful than the analog from BMW. It also used an aluminum "head" but with a silicon coating. Later, the engine range was supplemented with a diesel - an inline "six" with a volume of 3.5 liters. Later, it was replaced by a more economical 3-liter engine, which was an enlarged version of the 4-cylinder power units of the OM604 family.

Transmission

Despite its flagship status, the car could be equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, becoming the last S-Class with this type of transmission. Its alternative was a 4-range "automatic" of its own design. Later, for versions with inline gasoline 6-cylinder engines, the manufacturer began to offer a 5-speed automatic transmission 5G-Tronic with electronic control. In the fall of 1995, the brand established the production of its modified version, which could withstand the high torque of the V8 and V12, which until then were equipped with an alternative 4-range "automatic". This car was extremely popular in the 90s of the last century, constantly appearing on TV screens.
