Mercedes M-Class represents a mid-size luxury SUV. It has been produced since 1997. In the model range of the German brand, it occupies an intermediate position between the more compact GLC-Class and the larger GLS-Class.

History of creation

By the beginning of the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz had realized the need to replace the G-Class SUV with a less austere and more modern model. At that time, the "Geländewagen" had been in serial production for more than 10 years. To accelerate the development process, the German company signed an agreement with Mitsubishi in 1991 to gain access to the Pajero platform, which at that time was one of the most popular SUVs in the world. However, in the spring of the following year, it was decided to abandon these plans and continue designing on its own. The debut model with the W163 index appeared in serial production in the winter of 1997, representing a medium-sized frame car with increased clearance and a system of permanent all-wheel drive and a 2-range transfer case. Another innovation was the electronic imitation of three differentials, which could separately brake each wheel.

Second generation

In 1999, the design of the second-generation SUV began. A year later, three prototypes were presented, made in a 1:4 scale. As a result, the design was chosen, the author of which was Steve Mattin, the former chief designer of AutoVAZ. The car, presented in 2006, retained stylistic similarities with its predecessor but differed in having less aerodynamic resistance, despite significantly increased dimensions. Another innovation was the platform from the GL-Class, in which the body was a bearing element. In addition, the principal difference from the predecessor was the engine range, which consisted of new engines, except for the V8 with indices M113 and OM629. Later, modifications with a "hybrid" power plant appeared, where two variable-current electric motors with a power of 84 horsepower each were used. It worked in conjunction with a 2-mode variator. At the same time, the system of permanent all-wheel drive was preserved, but without a 2-range transfer case, losing the "reduced" gear.

Third generation

The SUV, presented in 2011, was developed over the previous five years. The car with the W166 index continued the evolution towards crossovers and universality of application. For this purpose, elements from the E-Class passenger car were used in the exterior and list of equipment, including a 7-speed &G-Tronic Plus gearbox, adaptive "cruise control," and a pneumatic suspension with electronic control. The key difference was again the platform, developed jointly by Daimler and Chrysler, which was used in the Jeep Cherokee and Dodge Durango. Despite significant differences in design, these three SUVs use the same engines and transmissions. In 2012, the German brand added the On&Off Road package to the list of options, which, after a long absence, included a 2-range transfer case from Magna Powertrain, a mechanical locking interaxle differential, protective plates on the bottom, as well as an electronic transmission and engine control system with 6 operating modes. In turn, the standard equipment of the car included a 4-ETS system with electronic imitation of locks, which appeared in the first M-Class. In 2015, the mid-size SUV underwent a restyling, as part of which its name was changed to GLE-Class. Even after so many years, a significant number of copies of the first generation are still present on our roads.
