Such a power unit made the remaining very heavy off-road vehicle only slightly faster than the standard version - 10.9 seconds to 100 km/h. This had a significant impact on sales. Only 13 units were produced. Nevertheless, AMG continued to work on this project. Throughout the 1990s, versions with a 6-cylinder gasoline engine M104 were offered, which was significantly modified. Its initial volume was increased by boring to 3.6 liters, which led to the use of a modified crankshaft from OM603 with forged pistons and camshafts of its own production. As a result, the power unit developed 276 horsepower and was later installed not only in the G-Class but also in the German brand's passenger cars.

G55 AMG

In 2002, the German brand launched the G 55 AMG off-road vehicle into serial production, which became one of the most popular models in the lineup. It used an "atmospheric" V8 with an increased volume of 5.4 liters, in which the previously obtained developments were used. The power unit turned out to be no less reliable, which allowed AMG to add a mechanical supercharger to it two years later, which brought the engine power to 469 horsepower, and the acceleration to "hundred" - to 5.6 seconds. Visually, this version differed in a stamped metal inscription Kompressor, other wheel disks in titanium color, and a radiator grille with three enlarged "ribs".

G63/65 AMG

In 2012, the popular V8 from the G 55 was replaced with a new power unit of the same layout with a volume of 5.5 liters, but with two turbochargers. This was largely due to the need to "fit" the car into compliance with environmental standards. The engine turned out to be not only more powerful but also more economical. Simultaneously with this version, the manufacturer introduced a modification with the G 65 index, which differed in the presence of a gasoline V12 with double turbocharging under the hood. In the spring of 2018, the German brand, as part of the debut of the off-road vehicle of the new generation, presented its "charged" version with the G63 index, which is currently the only one in the lineup. The off-road vehicle received a gasoline V8 with double turbocharging with a power of 577 horsepower, a corresponding suspension and brake system, as well as a transmission and engine control program with "proprietary" settings from AMG.
