Initially, the car used the same engines as the previous model. The exception was the new 2.5-liter engine, an in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine, developing 129 horsepower. In 1980, a new 2-liter gasoline engine with a carburetor fuel system appeared in the range, which became the base. As for the diesel part, for the first few years of production, it consisted exclusively of engines from the previous model. In the fall of 1979, a power unit with the OM617 index appeared in it, which became the first mass-produced turbocharged diesel engine for a passenger car. It was available exclusively for the 300 TD version on the European market, and only two years later it appeared in other countries where the German brand was present.

In terms of chassis, the car repeated two models of the brand. The rear suspension was almost unchanged from the predecessor, representing a combination of diagonal levers, shock absorbers, springs and a stabilizer of transverse stability. The front suspension "shared" with the S-Class. It was distinguished by the presence of double transverse levers, a stabilizer of transverse stability and a zero camber. This largely determined the good directional stability at high speed. Starting from 1979, an adjustable rear suspension became available as an additional option.
