Creation History

The car was developed over several years before the start of its serial production. The author of the exterior design is Steve Mattin, who was recently the chief designer of AvtoVAZ, and who, at the same time as the A-Class, was working on the development of the S-Class with the W220 index. The final look of the car was formed in 1995, a year and a half before the launch of production. It was a model of the B segment, differing in spaciousness inside and versatility in the application of larger passenger cars. This was achieved through the arrangement of wheels at the corners of the body, a shortened front end, increased width and height of the body between the front and rear axles. Soon after the start of sales, these solutions became the reason for the failure of the "moose test", when the car during tests by Swedish journalists from Teknikens Värld overturned during a sharp change in the trajectory of movement. The manufacturer initially denied the presence of a problem, but after three months, having conducted a recall campaign of all sold cars, included the stability control system in the standard equipment, spending around 300 million German marks.

Model W169

In 2004, the brand presented the second-generation car with the W169 index. Externally, the car has changed significantly, while preserving the easily recognizable features of its predecessor, noticeably increasing in size. Another feature was the use of glue to connect body elements. At the same time, the wider use of high-strength steel increased not only its stiffness but also its payload capacity - by 15% compared to its predecessor. In addition to the stability control system, the standard equipment included combined side airbags for the protection of the heads and breasts of front passengers. At the same time, they had a 2-stage opening system, activating one or both sections of the airbag depending on the force of the impact. In the list of additional equipment, there were side airbags and safety curtains for passengers in the second row of seats. The engine range was largely borrowed from its predecessor and consisted of in-line benzine "fours" with a volume of 1.5 to 2 liters of the M266 family and in-line diesel engines with a volume of 2 liters of the OM640 family. Power units, depending on the modification, worked in pairs with a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox, or with a variator with seven virtual "gears".

Model W176

The third-generation model, presented in 2012, was distinguished by the most significant changes. It was a compact passenger car of the C segment. Another innovation was the absence in the lineup of modifications with a 3-door hatchback body. The car was built on a modular platform MFA and differed in much larger dimensions than its predecessor, exceeding it in length by 490 mm, of which 132 mm fell on the wheelbase. The exterior design was largely borrowed from the F800 concept. At the same time, it turned out to be not only effective but also extremely efficient. The aerodynamic drag coefficient of this car was only 0.16. The use of a different platform made it possible to abandon the sandwich structure of the floor, thanks to which the center of gravity is located much lower than that of its predecessor. The chassis was almost completely borrowed from the B-Class. The front suspension was a classic "MacPherson", and the rear was based on four levers. The exception was the "charged" version of the 45 AMG, which, in addition to a completely redesigned suspension, was equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged engine with a power of 381 horsepower, all-wheel drive, a high-performance brake system, and sports multi-mode electronic "assistants".

Model W177

The car presented in 2018 became an evolutionary development of its predecessor. It was built on a modernized platform MFA, differing in two variants of the rear suspension. In some versions, instead of four levers at the back, torsion bars are used. At the start of sales, the car was offered with a reduced engine range. Its basis was turbocharged in-line "fours" with a volume of 1.3 and 2 liters, as well as diesel engines with a volume of 1.5 and 2 liters. During the modernization at the end of 2022, the 1.3-liter gasoline engines began to be used as one of the components of the "hybrid" power plant.
