The Mercedes C-Class AMG is a line of "charged" versions of the compact passenger car, differing from the original model in both higher technical characteristics and extensive equipment. It has been produced since 1995.

Initial Version

The AMG lettering first appeared on the C-Class in 1995, three years after the debut of the first-generation model. This was the German brand's response to the BMW M3. The car was developed in conjunction with the AMG tuning studio, which had recently become a structural unit of Mercedes-Benz. The mechanical components were mainly modified, primarily the suspension, which received sports shock absorbers and springs that reduced the ground clearance by 25 mm, providing more precise handling and increased grip in turns. This was largely due to the appearance of a 3.6-liter gasoline engine under the hood. The inline "six" with the M104 index was assembled manually, which is why its power varied from 276 to 287 horsepower. With this engine, the car accelerated to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, and the top speed reached 272 km/h. Nevertheless, just two years later, such performance was not enough, and the brand introduced an even more powerful version. The C 43 AMG had a 4.3-liter V8 gasoline engine, producing 310 horsepower, and it was available not only as a sedan but also as a station wagon. For the most desperate, the manufacturer introduced a package in 1998 that allowed this engine to be made even more powerful. After the conversion, the C 43 turned into the 347-horsepower C 55 with a 5.4-liter V8.

Second Iteration

In 2001, the manufacturer introduced the second-generation car. From the start of sales, this was a line of "charged" models, consisting of two different versions, both of which were created with an eye on the BMW M3. This is why a V-shaped 3.2-liter gasoline "six" with 354 horsepower was used. The more compact engine size allowed it to be shifted closer to the engine shield, improving weight distribution across the axles. An alternative to this option was a diesel modification with a 3-liter 5-cylinder engine, not as powerful, only 231 horsepower, but much more torquey - 540 Nm. In both cases, the cars did not prove to be commercially successful, so in 2005, a more "correct" version with the C55 index and a 5.4-liter V8 from the E-Class was introduced, accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. To fit this unit under the hood, it was necessary to widen the front by 80 mm, along with significant changes to the suspension and exhaust system.

C 63 AMG

The next generation of the model debuted in 2008. For the first time in its history, it was developed from scratch, rather than by modifying the standard C-Class, from which its predecessors differed in complexity of handling. The line of versions was reduced to one, which received the C 63 AMG index. It was equipped with a 6.2-liter V8, a modified version of the engine from the previous model, producing 457 horsepower in the standard version. The packages of equipment presented in 2009 and 2010 allowed "extracting" 487 horsepower from this engine. The power unit worked in pair with a 7-speed 7G-Tronic gearbox with four modes, including "manual", which made it possible to keep the engine at maximum speed. Additionally, the suspension and steering were completely revised.

Modern Versions

In 2015, the car was significantly updated, following the standard C-Class. It was created on the new modular MRA platform at the time, which implied, among other things, the creation of "charged" versions based on it, as well as significantly reduced the car's weight, making it much stiffer. In technical terms, the key innovation was the line of engines. The initial version received the engine from the C400, a 3-liter turbocharged V6, with 362 horsepower, as well as the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and a 7-speed "automatic". In turn, the top modification, as before, was equipped with a V8, with a volume of 4 liters, but with two turbochargers. Depending on the degree of boost, the engine produced 469 or 503 horsepower, consuming a third less fuel than its predecessor.

In the spring of 2022, the manufacturer introduced the next iteration of the model. The key difference from the predecessor was again the line of engines. It consists of two hybrid power units, in which a 2-liter turbocharged inline "four" is used, which is supplemented by a traction electric motor and a 48-volt traction battery, with a power of 429 or 469 horsepower, depending on the version.
