Development began in 1987. At the start of sales, the model was offered with a fairly wide range of engines, starting with a 2-liter gasoline and 1.9-liter diesel. The most dynamic modifications were equipped with a VR6 engine with a volume of 2.8 liters and a power of 174 hp. At the end of the production cycle, versions with this and a 1.9-liter diesel engine received a 4motion all-wheel drive system. In 2000, the German brand introduced a modified car. It differed in an increased wheelbase, front and rear track, as well as an external appearance brought into greater conformity with the corporate style of the manufacturer of those years. In addition, the dashboard from Ford disappeared in the salon, which was replaced by a detail of its own design, and seven seats became part of the standard equipment of all versions. It was further expanded in the 2004 update, where, in addition to this, a new radiator grille, rear lights, and side airbags appeared.

In contrast to its predecessor, the second-generation minivan, presented in 2010, was exclusively its own development, where the platform from the mid-size sedan Passat B7 was used. It significantly increased the dimensions of the car, which became 22 cm longer, 92 mm wider, and 75 mm larger in terms of wheelbase. At the same time, the more widespread use of high-strength steel made it possible to reduce the weight of the minivan by 30 kg. The engine range has changed significantly, with 1.4- and 2-liter TSI engines and new 2-liter diesel engines with a Common Rail fuel system appearing. They worked in combination with manual or robotic transmissions. In combination with improved aerodynamics, this resulted in a significant reduction in fuel consumption. Another important difference from the predecessor was the appearance of versions with three seating schemes. In addition to the existing 2+3 and 2+3+2, modifications with a 6-seat salon with two seats in each row were added. In the fall of 2022, the manufacturer announced the removal of the minivan from production, which was due to a change in buyer preferences to crossovers.
