Volkswagen Phaeton – a luxury sedan that was introduced by the company in 2002. The car turned out to be ambiguous. This was due to its too "simple" exterior, which differed little from an ordinary average sedan. According to the manufacturer's idea, such a car should have attracted wealthy people who did not want to inform "the whole world" about their wealth. Technical features

The car was built on the D3 platform, which was used in the Audi A8 and Bentley Continental. At the same time, the model was supposed to compete with the Mercedes S-Class and the 7th series of BMW. The all-wheel drive sedan, sometimes front-wheel drive, had two body options: standard and extended. In both cases, the length exceeded 5 meters.

The interior trim was represented by a strict style, in which elements made of natural leather and valuable wood species were used. The car's equipment corresponded to its class – 4-zone climate control, 8 airbags, xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, double glazing, high level of noise insulation. Also, an adaptive pneumatic suspension was provided, which automatically adjusted the ground clearance depending on the speed mode, improving the aerodynamic resistance indicators.

Under the hood, 3.2-liter V6 and 4.2-liter V8 gasoline engines were installed. A version with a V12 was also released, which produced 450 horsepower. Diesel was represented by turbocharged engines with a capacity of 3 and 4.9 liters.

Modifications

In 2007, the model underwent a minor facelift, and the V6 3.2 l was replaced with a more modern 3.6 liter.
In 2010, more significant changes were made. The car received a completely updated front end, as well as improved technical equipment. What's worth mentioning is the electric seat adjustment with 18 settings. In addition, a modern option control system appeared, based on a touch screen. The power units also underwent changes. The most powerful of them, with a capacity of 6 liters (W12), was able to accelerate the heavy car to "hundred" in 6.1 seconds.

Despite all the manufacturer's efforts, the "Phaeton" never became popular in the global market. And this was evidenced by the low sales, which were worsening every year. Therefore, in 2016, the company announced the termination of production of the model.
