Volkswagen Passat Variant Alltrack is the "off-road" version of the popular German brand's station wagon. The car debuted in the fall of 2010, filling the gap in the production line between passenger models and crossovers, positioning itself, like the Subaru Outback, at the intersection of these two classes.

Initial version

The main difference of this model is the increased ground clearance compared to the standard wagon, which is 165 mm instead of the initial 135 mm for European market versions. Three additional centimeters had a positive effect on the angles of departure, entry, and ramp. Another unique feature was the use of the 4Motion all-wheel drive system in combination with an electronic control system borrowed from the German brand's crossovers and SUVs, where not only the transmission, including the "robot" DSG, but also the brake mechanisms are used. This allowed for the implementation of differential lock functions, "hill descent", as well as operating modes for various types of soil surface. The engine range was "borrowed" from the standard wagon — two 2-liter diesel engines with 140 and 170 horsepower, as well as two 1.8 and 2-liter TSI gasoline engines, producing 160 and 207 horsepower, respectively. Diesel versions already had a "start-stop" system and a function for recovering electrical energy during braking, which charges the battery. The least powerful engines were used only in front-wheel drive modifications, combining exclusively with a 6-speed "mechanics". All versions with the 4Motion all-wheel drive system were available with a 6-speed "robot" DSG. The exception was the same 140-horsepower diesel version, which was available, including with all-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission.

Updated version

With the debut in 2015 of the eighth-generation Passat line, the "off-road" version of the wagon was also updated, fully preserving the concept of its predecessor. The car was created on the modular MQB platform, sharing it with the compact Golf hatchback of the 7th generation, but its dimensions have hardly changed. A much more important feature, given the concept of the car, was the increase in ground clearance — up to 174 mm, as well as the appearance in the "base" of the 4Motion all-wheel drive system. Moreover, again in the same version that was offered for crossovers and SUVs of the German brand, including the Offroad mode, which can be selected through a "washer" on the central console. The presence of a clutch on the rear axle led to a slight reduction in the space of the luggage compartment, which, however, retained an impressive volume — 639 liters. The engine range, as before, was composed of engines from the standard wagon, but with a prevalence of the "diesel" part. The "base" versions were equipped with a 150-horsepower version of the 2-liter TDI engine, which could be combined, including with a 6-speed manual transmission. Other modifications already had a robotic transmission with a dual clutch and the same number of gear ratios in standard equipment.
