Type 2

The first three generations of the model were called Type 2, which indicated their relation to the first commercial vehicles in the brand's history, developed on the basis of the legendary "Beetle". The initial version was released in the spring of 1950 and was produced with minor changes until 1967 with an opposite engine from the Beetle, which over the years increased in working volume and compression ratio. It was installed until 1959 and at that time represented a 1.2-liter engine with a power of 41 horsepower. After that, it was replaced by a more modern engine with a volume of 1.5 liters with an increased torque. Serial production of the first-generation vehicle was discontinued in Germany in 1967, but at the plant in Brazil, it was produced until 1975.

In 1967, a modernized model went into production, retaining the design of its predecessor. Externally, it differed in the characteristic division of the windshield and increased length and weight. At the same time, it retained the layout of the predecessor, but was equipped with a more powerful and traction engine with a volume of 1.6 liters, an electrical network with a voltage of 12V, half-shafts with constant velocity joints, and an increased ground clearance. In 1979, the brand introduced the next generation of the vehicle. It was the last one to use an air-cooled engine, which after 4 years of production received water cooling, but retained its location in the rear. Compared to its predecessors, it changed externally much more, increasing in size and losing the rounded edges of the body panels.

T4

In 1990, the brand introduced an absolutely new van with fundamental differences from all its predecessors. First of all, the layout changed. For the first time in the brand's history, a commercial vehicle was released with a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. The engine range was completely updated, including a series of power units from "charged" versions of passenger cars. First and foremost, this is a 2.8-liter VR6 gasoline engine with a power of 204 horsepower. In addition, a modification with all-wheel drive using the Haldex viscous coupling appeared in the list of available options. The vehicle proved to be very popular and stayed in serial production for almost 14 years, acquiring a large number of "clones" from other brands during this time.

T5 and T6

The fifth generation of the vehicle debuted in 2003. It represented a platform on which more than 100 modifications with a payload capacity from 750 kg to 1.4 tons were created, with two options for the wheelbase and three for the roof height. In addition, the vehicle was available in the form of a van, minibus, light truck with a single and double cab, and was also offered as a chassis for various superstructures.

In 2016, the T6 model was introduced. In essence, it was a modernized T5, using the same platform and mechanical components. The most significant difference was the redesigned front, which improved safety and aerodynamics. Inside the cabin, a new instrument panel appeared, and in the list of options - LED headlights and taillights, a multimedia system, and a number of electronic driver assistance systems.

T7

In December 2023, the debut of the current 7th generation model took place. In addition to the futuristic design, the vehicle is distinguished by the use of the modular MQB Evo platform, on which the entire passenger car line of the Volkswagen concern is developed. The range of power units has been significantly redesigned, consisting of diesel engines, as well as "hybrid" and fully electric units.
