Volkswagen Beetle is a compact passenger car that was produced from 1938 to 2003. History of Creation

The development of the car began in 1934 at Porsche. The first practical results in the form of running prototypes appeared in the fall of 1935. Road tests were completed in early 1937, after which the car began to be produced in small batches until the beginning of World War II. It was distinguished by a 2-door body designed for four people and a rear-mounted engine. The trunk was located in the front, and in addition, there was an additional storage compartment behind the rear sofa in the cabin. The body was attached to the frame with 18 bolts, which was a practically flat platform with a tunnel for the propeller shaft. The suspension was torsion on all four wheels, with double longitudinal levers used at the front. Another feature was the use of an air-cooled engine and a transmission with a large number of aluminum parts, which significantly reduced the weight of the car.

Post-War Version

Mass production of the car began after the end of World War II. At the same time, a virtually continuous modernization was carried out. The first few years it affected the interior, where higher-quality materials appeared, and partially the exterior - new body colors, chrome-plated metal bumpers. In the 1950s, the car received a modernized engine with an increased working volume of up to 1.2 liters and a power of 30 horsepower. In addition, during this period, the rear window became solid and rectangular, and the instrument panel became more convenient to use. In the 1960s, the car's update also mainly concerned the technical part. The most significant of these was the appearance of a fully synchronized 4-speed manual transmission, as well as a once again modernized engine, which added 6 horsepower.

Model 1302

In August 1970, the manufacturer presented an updated version of the car, which received the index 1302. The fundamental difference from its predecessor was the suspension, where MacPherson struts with transverse levers and a stabilizer appeared at the front. This made it possible to significantly increase the volume of the trunk, changing the location of the spare wheel to horizontal. Five years later, the car received a rack-and-pinion steering and expanded equipment, which made the model more comfortable.

Model 1600

In 1986, the car underwent another modernization. This time it mainly affected the power unit. It was still an in-line "four", but with an increased volume of up to 1.6 liters and components from other Volkswagen passenger models - a catalytic converter, a Bosch Digifant engine management system. In addition, it retained the ability to work smoothly on unleaded gasoline, for which the manufacturer provided hydraulic compensators and a direct-flow oil filter, and the compression ratio was reduced to 6.6:1. Among other important innovations, it is worth noting the appearance of a self-locking differential from ZF, which was offered as an option. At the same time, the list of standard equipment was significantly expanded and included a steering wheel and front seats from Golf Mk3, an alarm system, bumpers painted in the body color, and disc brake mechanisms at the front.
