Another difference was the 4-speed manual transmission with close-ratio gearing. These solutions allowed the hatchback to accelerate to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds. During the production cycle of this model, the "engine-transmission" combination was repeatedly updated. Before being discontinued, the car was equipped with a 1.8-liter version of the engine, producing 112 hp, and a 5-speed manual transmission. In addition, the chassis underwent significant changes. The car received different shock absorbers and springs, which reduced the ground clearance by 15 mm, ventilated brake discs of increased diameter at the front, as well as stabilizers of transverse stability on both axles.

In addition to the technical aspects, it also differed in its special "design". The standard equipment of the model included black wheel arch extensions, an enlarged front bumper, and a red frame of the radiator grille. Inside, a bright plaid upholstery was used, as well as a gearshift lever knob in the shape of a golf ball.

The next generation of the car was presented only in 1985, two years after the debut of the standard version of the second generation. Initially, it used the 1.8-liter engine from its predecessor and similarly modified chassis. In 1987, the power unit received a 16-valve cylinder head, which allowed increasing the power to 139 hp. In 1993, the car underwent another update, simultaneously with the standard hatchback, which also changed generation. The key innovation was the appearance of a 2-liter gasoline engine with 150 hp.

Fifth and Sixth Generations

In the fall of 2003, the fifth-generation car debuted. It differed from its predecessor in the use of a different platform, which it shared with the standard hatchback. Again, the key change was the engine - an in-line gasoline "four" with a volume of 2 liters, turbocharged and with a sequential fuel injection, producing 200 hp and 280 Nm. The power unit was combined with 6-speed manual and robotic transmissions. It turned out to be quite problematic, so in the next generation of the car, it was replaced by an engine of the same volume and similar power, but without most of the drawbacks, primarily related to the high-pressure fuel pump and intake manifold.

Seventh Generation

The hatchback presented in 2012 had many more differences from the standard model than its predecessor. First of all, this is a gasoline engine TSI with turbocharging, a volume of 2 liters, and a power of 220 hp. The body of this version differs in the more widespread use of high-strength steel, which not only positively affected the handling but also increased the level of passive safety. It is also worth noting the presence of an automatic post-collision braking system, even in the "base", pretensioners of seat belts that trigger automatically, along with the closure of windows and a sunroof.

Eighth Generation

In 2020, sales of the current generation car started, along with two other sports versions of the standard hatchback. Externally, it could be distinguished by a red decorative strip between the headlights and exhaust pipes, spaced to the edges of the rear bumper. In technical terms, the most significant change was the appearance of an engine from the Performance version of the previous model - an in-line gasoline "four" with a volume of 2 liters of the EA888 evo4 series, producing 245 hp and 370 Nm. A unique feature of this version was the ability to choose between a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed "robot" DSG.
