The compact sedan Volkswagen Sagitar has been produced since 2006. It is a localized copy of the Jetta model, intended for the domestic market in China.

First Generation

The car debuted in China in 2006 and was initially assembled from vehicle kits supplied from Mexico, where the full production of this sedan was carried out. It was created on the PQ35 platform, sharing it and most components with the Golf hatchback of the 5th generation. The key difference from it is the body type, as well as the increased rear overhang, which added space in the leg area of the second-row passengers and the volume of the trunk, bringing this indicator to 453 liters. Another feature was the rear multi-link suspension. Its layout is largely similar to what was installed in the Ford Focus. A number of automotive publications reported that Volkswagen hired engineers from the European division of the North American brand to develop the chassis of this model.

Second Generation

In 2012, the production of the next-generation sedan began. This time it was a copy of the sixth-generation Jetta. The car turned out to be larger, but at the same time cheaper to produce, since it consisted of a much smaller number of components than before. Another difference from the predecessor was the absence of common body panels with Golf and an extended wheelbase, despite the use of the same platform with the index PQ35. The mentioned simplification of the design, unfortunately, affected the chassis. Instead of the "multi-link" rear, a semi-dependent beam appeared. The "Chinese" version had a slightly different engine range than the original Jetta. At the start of sales, the sedan was available with two engines - a 1.6-liter "atmospheric" and a turbocharged TSI with a volume of 1.4 liters. Two years later, a modification with a 1.8-liter TSI was added to the lineup, and in 2016 and 2017 - 2- and 1.2-liter power units.

Third Generation

The next iteration of the "Chinese" Jetta was presented in China in the winter of 2019. The car used a modified version of the modular MQB platform, which was distinguished by an increased wheelbase. As a result, the car turned out to be longer than even the American version, exceeding it in this parameter by 22 mm. This was due to the positioning in the Volkswagen model range in China, where at that time the Lavida sedan was produced, which was extremely close in concept and appearance. This model was an attempt to offer buyers a car of a higher class, distinguished by both larger dimensions and comfort and materials. To a large extent, this determined the choice of power units. Unlike the predecessor, the engine range consists exclusively of turbocharged 4-cylinder engines of the EA211 series with a volume of 1.2 to 1.5 liters, developing from 115 to 160 horsepower. "Mechanics" was available only in the base trim. All more expensive versions had an alternative 7-speed "robot" DSG with two clutches. It is in this generation that the car is more widely represented in our country. At the same time, its technical proximity to Jetta ensures ease of finding tires and wheels for it.
