In 1999, a car of the next generation was presented. Here, too, a pause was made in serial production, which began two years after the debut of the standard version in the hatchback body. The difference from the predecessor was the positioning of the car, which was intended to fill the gap between the "economy" from Seat/Skoda and the "premium" from Audi. In fact, the wagon turned out to be extremely close to Audi, since the range of versions included a modification with a four-wheel drive system from the Swedish Haldex. In addition, the list of additional equipment included xenon headlights, windshield wipers with a "rain" sensor. Another advantage was the 12-year warranty against through corrosion, which was a unique offer for this segment.

The wagon of the next iteration debuted in March 2007, four years after the premiere of the hatchback. Such a long pause was due to the manufacturer's reluctance to allow internal competition with the Golf Plus and Touran, compact minivans. However, he had to succumb to the opinion of buyers and dealers, who for all four years asked for a regular wagon, which was released at the end of the Golf Mk5 life cycle. After the production of this model was completed, its version in the wagon body continued to be produced, but with a changed exterior, especially in the front part, which was identical to the Golf Mk6, and was sold along with it until 2009, when a car of a new generation was presented. It turned out to be a modernized version of the predecessor, where the same platform was used, but with components from the 6th generation hatchback, including the interior, body parts in the front, engines, and transmission.

Model 5G

A truly new wagon model was presented in 2012 along with the hatchback, which had never happened before. The key difference from the predecessor was the modular MQB platform, which, in particular, allowed significantly expanding the number of versions, forming a whole line of models. Another advantage was a significant increase in space not only in the cabin but also in the luggage compartment, the volume of which was increased at once by 100 liters and reached 605 liters. The range of engines has expanded significantly, including four petrol and three diesel power units. In particular, a modification with a 1.6-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 110 horsepower and a 6-speed manual transmission appeared, which became one of the most economical in its segment. The most dynamic version was the Golf R Variant, which was equipped with a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine of the EA888 family and the Haldex all-wheel-drive system.

Model CD1

The wagon of the next generation debuted in the fall of 2020. The car is built on the MQB Evo platform, like the Audi A3 and Seat Leon. The exterior has changed significantly compared to the predecessor, becoming more angular and receiving a descending arc in the silhouette of the front part. This solution allowed significantly reducing the aerodynamic drag coefficient to 0.27. The dimensions have hardly changed, the car turned out to be a few centimeters longer and narrower, while maintaining the same wheelbase. The modernized platform made it possible to significantly expand the list of equipment, mainly due to electronic systems that ensure safety and comfort. Unlike most competitors, the car has retained a wide range of engines, which starts with a 1-liter petrol engine with a turbocharger with variable geometry. Power units with a volume of more than 1.5 liters have a system that turns off 2 out of 4 cylinders during uniform movement. A significant change was the disappearance from the range of modifications with a fully electric power plant, which is due to the manufacturer's reluctance to allow internal competition with other models. At the same time, new "hybrid" versions with a plug-in electric motor appeared, which develops up to 245 horsepower.
