The Volkswagen California camper van has been part of the German brand's model lineup since 1988. The first two generations of the model were produced by Wesfalia at an external plant. In 2004, its production was transferred to Volkswagen's own facilities. The current generation of the model was introduced in the spring of 2024.

Change of concept

The vehicle is built on the modular MQB platform, which was initially developed for use in the brand's passenger cars. Unlike its predecessors, this camper van has only a partial technical connection to the commercial Transporter and Caravelle, and this is reflected in the change in the original concept. The extended version of the Multivan was taken as the "base" for the development of this model, from which it is fundamentally different due to its lifting roof. It comes as standard equipment, allowing the cabin height to be increased to 2.1 meters from the initial 1.3 meters, as well as organizing two sleeping places under the tent. The cabin itself has the same layout as the extended Multivan, as well as the design and trim materials. However, with the increase in equipment in the configuration, the car becomes more and more touristy. In particular, there are front seats with a swivel mechanism, folding tables, a pull-out mattress, and a kitchen unit, the placement of which caused significant difficulties due to the presence of two sliding doors in the Multivan, rather than one, as in the previous model. Therefore, the kitchen equipment had to be placed in a recess in the rear of the body on the left side. This turned out to be the only place where the sink with a 28-liter tank, a gas stove, and closable containers for kitchen utensils could fit. In turn, the opposite side and "basement" contain one or two batteries with a capacity of 40 Ah for powering 230-volt sockets and a second air conditioner.

Technical features

The power range consists of the same engines that are installed in the Multivan. The "base" one is a 2-liter turbocharged diesel "four" with 150 horsepower. For fans of "faster" driving, a modification with a 204-horsepower gasoline TSI is provided. Both engines are combined with a 7-speed robotic DSG gearbox and front-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system is only available in the "hybrid" version of the camper van, in which the 1.5-liter TSI of the evo2 line and the traction electric motor together produce 245 horsepower. At the same time, there is enough torque for the car to be able to tow a 2-ton trailer. The camper van is equipped with wheels of the same size as the technically related Multivan.
