«Volkswagen Lupo» — one of the most compact hatchbacks from the German manufacturer, which was presented in 1998. There was also a 1.7-liter diesel engine with 60 hp. In 1999, an engine from the «Polo» model was installed, with a volume of 1.4 liters and a power output of 100 hp. During the same period, a power unit with four cylinders and direct fuel injection 1.4 FSI was introduced. Running on gasoline, it produced 105 hp at 6200 rpm, and the torque was 130 Nm. Its main advantage was a 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to classic engines with distributed fuel injection.

Modifications

To stimulate buyer demand, in 2000, the company introduced a «charged» modification of the hatchback GTI. Its «heart» was a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 125 hp. It allowed to reach the first hundred in 8.3 seconds, and the maximum speed was limited to 205 km/h. The standard equipment already included leather seats and a steering wheel, heated side mirrors, electric windows, ABS and ESP systems, xenon headlights.

Lupo Windsor is another variation of the model, which appeared in 2003. It was distinguished by the presence of chrome trim in the luggage compartment, special seat trim, wheel hub caps painted in body color. Under the hood, five engine options were installed: 2 diesel and 3 gasoline.

The model was able to stay on the assembly line until 2005. And despite its popularity (more than 488 thousand copies were sold), it was removed from production. For several years, there was no successor. Only in 2011, a new model «Up» appeared, which filled the vacant niche.
