The Volkswagen Passat Variant is one of the versions of the mid-size D-class passenger car. It has been produced since 1974 and is one of the most popular models in its segment since the start of mass production.

First Generation

The car made its debut in 1974. Except for the body type, the model did not differ from the original version. In the first few years of mass production, the car was equipped with in-line petrol "fours" with a volume of 1.3 and 1.5 liters, developed by Audi. In August 1975, the car began to be equipped with a 1.6-liter engine, which was an improved version of the 1.5-liter power unit, with an increased working volume. This made it possible to slightly increase the torque. In the summer of 1978, a modification with a diesel engine from Golf with a power of 50 horsepower appeared, and in the next one - with an injector version of a petrol engine with a volume of 1.6 liters.

Second Generation

In 1981, the manufacturer introduced the second-generation car. It used a modernized platform of the predecessor, which allowed to slightly increase the wheelbase. The engine range was also borrowed from the previous model, but it included 5-cylinder engines with a volume of 1.9 to 2.2 liters, which were equipped with the most dynamic versions. The power units were combined with 4- and 5-speed mechanical or 3-range automatic gearboxes. In addition to them, the car was equipped with the Volkswagen 4+E transmission. It was distinguished by the presence of 4th and 5th increasing gears, which seriously limited the acceleration capabilities, but when driving at a uniform speed, it provided significant fuel savings. In 1983, the manufacturer introduced a Syncro version with a four-wheel drive system, but it was not borrowed from the Golf Syncro, but from the Audi 80, which became, perhaps, the only case of using Quattro outside of models of this German brand. The choice in favor of the station wagon was due to Volkswagen's reluctance to create internal competition.

Third Generation

In the spring of 1988, the premiere of the car of the third iteration took place. The key innovation was the change in the layout, in which the engine was located transversely, and not longitudinally, which was due to the use of the Volkswagen platform, and not Audi. This was the same platform as in the Golf, but in a modified version, being "stretched" in all directions. Another difference from the predecessor was the engine range, in which there were no engines with a carburetor fuel system. At the same time, the most dynamic versions were equipped with a power unit from the Golf GTi - this was a petrol VR6, with which the station wagon accelerated to 220 km/h.

Fourth Generation

In 1993, the manufacturer introduced the car of the fourth generation. Technically, it was a modernized version of the predecessor, differing, first of all, in the external appearance, which was brought in line with the corporate style of that time. The most significant difference was the appearance of a new diesel engine with a volume of 1.9 liters with turbocharging and direct fuel injection, which was used in almost all passenger and commercial vehicles of the brand for several decades.

Fifth Generation

In 1997, the mass production of the car of the fifth generation began. It had a completely changed appearance, in which rounded shapes prevailed, thanks to which it was possible to significantly improve aerodynamics. In turn, the interior received high-quality finishing materials, and the list of equipment - options available for cars of a higher class. From a technical point of view, it also underwent significant changes. The front suspension became 4-link, and the rear - received a semi-independent beam on torsions. As an alternative to the modification with a four-wheel drive system, they were equipped with a fully independent suspension and on the rear axle. They were presented in 1997, but this was not Quattro from Audi, but Torsen of the second generation, which was distinguished by much lower mechanical losses. Another important innovation was the appearance in the engine range of a petrol engine with a volume of 1.8 liters EA113, including the one that became legendary later - with turbocharging. The power unit turned out to be extremely successful, differing in high efficiency and reliability.

Sixth and Seventh Generation

In the spring of 2005, the debut of the car of the sixth iteration took place. It used a modified version of the PQ35 platform of its own design, sharing it with the Golf Mk5, differing in increased torsional rigidity. Another difference was the four-wheel drive system from the Swedish Haldex with a multi-disc clutch, which brought the handling closer to the versions with front-wheel drive, and also allowed varying the transmission of traction along the axes in a wider range. In the autumn of 2010, the manufacturer introduced the car of the 7th generation. It used the platform from the predecessor, despite significant differences in design, in which not a single body part coincided. In addition, the list of equipment has changed significantly, in which a large number of electronic "assistants" has been added, ensuring safety and comfort. Another important innovation was the engine range, the basis of which was formed by petrol turbocharged engines with a volume of 1.4 to 2 liters of the TSI family.

Eighth Generation

In the summer of 2014, the premiere of the station wagon of the eighth generation took place. It differed from the predecessor by the modular MQB platform, which provided more internal space and its more efficient use for component placement. Another difference was the use of steel, obtained by vacuum forming, in the power elements of the body. This technology made it possible to reduce the weight of the car by more than 70 kg. During the first few years of mass production, its engine range was composed of engines from the previous model, but which had been modernized, adding power and fuel efficiency to them. In 2015, four more petrol and two diesel power units were added.
