History of creation

This model appeared by the method of "trial and error". Initially, the German brand was developing its first compact crossover based on the Volkswagen Up, which was less than 3.9 meters long. The project was brought to the stage of the Taigun concept, which was presented in Brazil in 2012. Its serial production was planned to begin in 2016. However, after the release of the first prototype models, it was decided to abandon this project - the car turned out to be excessively compact. And in the same year, work began on the development of a compact crossover based on the Polo. In the fall of 2016, the manufacturer presented the first concept, which received the name T-Cross. Unlike serial samples, it was a 4-seat convertible with a fabric roof. But at the same time, it was noticeably larger than its predecessor, with a length of 4.13 meters and a width of 1.8 meters. The serial production went to the 5-door crossover of the classical layout.

Despite its positioning as an entry-level model, the car turned out to be only slightly smaller than the T-Roc, developed on the basis of the more spacious Golf. Moreover, the German brand offered this crossover as a practical solution for a small family, as well as for the elderly, thanks to the high seating position of passengers and the large space above the head. Having a platform from Polo, the car borrowed most of the mechanical components from it. First of all, this is the line of engines. At the start of sales, it consisted of 4 engines, starting with a row diesel "four" with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 95 hp, and a 3-cylinder petrol engine TSI with a volume of 1 liter of the same power. The most dynamic modifications received a power unit from Golf/Tiguan - a turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with a volume of 1.5 liters, developing 150 hp. Depending on the installed engine, the car could be equipped with 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions, or a 7-range "robot" DSG. Another important feature was that the platform used from Polo made it impossible to install an all-wheel drive system. This crossover, regardless of the modification, has a drive exclusively on the front axle. The concept of the car significantly expands the list of available tires for installation on it.
