The model acquired a more distinctive look, ceasing to resemble its ancestor, the Audi 80. The range of power units was also expanded, with 8 petrol engines and 3 diesel engines. All of them could be equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 4- or 5-speed manual transmission. Along with front-wheel drive, a four-wheel-drive version also appeared.

In 1988, the next generation, indexed as B3, was released. Initially, the car was presented in Europe, and only two years later it appeared in the USA. At the start of sales, two body options were offered: an estate and a sedan. A gradation of trim levels depending on the equipment also appeared.

The number of power units was reduced to 4 options, 2 petrol and 2 diesel. The stylish exterior, excellent driving characteristics, and variability of trim levels also made the model very popular.

B4 and B5

The fourth generation was simply a deep restyling of the previous model. But the truly revolutionary car was the one under the B5 index, which was presented in 1996. It was released on the same platform as the Audi A4 and A6. The car, produced in a circulation of 3.3 million, became truly popular. As before, it was presented in sedan and estate bodies, and there were more engines. In addition to the 1.6 and 1.8 liters, 4.0-liter engines with eight cylinders also appeared.

B6, B7, and the present day

The next generation, B6, was released in 2005. Its key difference was the transverse arrangement of the power unit, which improved handling. Among the significant changes, the appearance of the pre-selective DSG gearbox can be noted.

The seventh generation, in essence, was a deep restyling of the previous model. The exterior was redesigned, and all atmospheric engines were removed, replaced by turbocharged units.

The eighth generation started in 2014 and is current to this day. It stands out with a fully changed exterior and interior. The use of many aluminum elements, which reduced the weight of the vehicle, making it more economical. Many "assistants" were added, which improve comfort and make driving safe.
