In the fall of 1980, the serial production of the third-generation car began. In technical terms, it did not have a technical connection with the predecessor. The most significant innovation was the transition to front-wheel drive and, accordingly, the use of a different platform. In addition, the engine range changed completely, consisting of engines with overhead camshaft. Another change was the appearance of a fully independent suspension at the front and rear. The completely redesigned body differed in the widespread use of high-strength steel, which made it 75 kg lighter, while increasing its torsional stiffness.

Fourth generation

In March 1986, the manufacturer presented the car of the fourth generation, which was a modernized version of the predecessor. The exterior design, although it has changed significantly, retained stylistic similarities with the previous model, differing in rounded edges, while retaining the protruding trunk lid, a characteristic feature of the third-generation car. In technical terms, there were few changes. The most significant of them was the appearance of modifications with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine operating on a lean fuel-air mixture. In addition, a new subframe appeared, which significantly reduced transmission noise and vibration.

Fifth and sixth generations

The car of the fifth generation appeared in the fall of 1990. It differed in a new body design and a simpler rear suspension, in which a beam and torsion bars appeared. The engine range was mainly composed of engines from the previous generation. The new design allowed for a significant reduction in the drag coefficient - to 0.35. In addition, this gave a noticeable increase in the trunk volume - up to 385 liters. In 1992, a gasoline inline "four" of the Zetec family with a volume of 1.8 liters debuted in the car, which significantly improved the driving characteristics. In the same year, the "charged" version - RS Cosworth - was presented. Technically, it was almost unrelated to the standard model, since it used the platform and layout with a longitudinal engine arrangement from the Sierra. It had a 2-liter turbocharged engine with a capacity of 225 horsepower, as well as an all-wheel drive system. Externally, this version was distinguished by an excessively large spoiler on the rear door. Initially, Ford did not plan to produce this car for a long time, but the demand turned out to be so great that its production was stopped only in 1996, already after the debut of the model of the next generation.

The car of the next iteration, presented in the winter of 1995, continued the evolutionary development of the two previous generations. Externally, it differed from them in a changed front part, side mirrors, and door handles. There were many more innovations inside, since the previous model's salon was a reason for criticism, mainly due to the low quality of materials, which was eliminated. The engine range included upgraded "basic" engines with a volume of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. In turn, the suspension, while retaining the layout, received new settings, thanks to which the smoothness of the ride increased, while maintaining the "signature" manageability of the model with a bright "sporty" bias.
