The Honda Freed minivan has been in production since 2008. Initially, the vehicle was intended for the domestic Japanese market, being created on the basis of the compact hatchback Fit/Jazz.

First Generation

The car of the first iteration, presented in 2008, stood out against the background of its "classmates" with exceptional versatility. With extremely small dimensions, it offered a three-row cabin, accommodating up to 7-8 passengers, depending on the presence of two "captain's" chairs in the second row. This was due to the use of the Fit hatchback platform, in a modified version with a wheelbase increased to 2740 mm. The wheels themselves were maximally spaced at the corners of the body. To this should be added the height of the minivan, which is greater than that of the average crossover of that time, as well as the flat floor of the cabin. Under the hood was a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine with 120 horsepower. The base versions had front-wheel drive and a variator, but for an additional fee, a four-wheel drive system with a coupling on the rear axle from the CR-V crossover was available. From it, a 5-speed hydro-mechanical "automatic" was also borrowed.

Second Generation

In 2016, the premiere of the second-generation car took place. The car was still based on the platform of the compact hatchback Fit, but already of the next generation. Visually, it differed from its predecessor by a smaller number of edges on the body panels and an increased glazing area. Additional openings appeared in the front pillars of the roof, improving visibility. The salon also underwent similar changes, becoming more conservative, but retaining the 3-tier layout of the front console. At the very top is a digital instrument panel, and the console itself, due to its shape, contains a large number of niches and containers for storing small items. The cabin still has three rows of seats, but the distance between them has increased by a total of 90 mm. The base versions were designed to carry up to 7 passengers. For an additional fee, two "captain's" chairs were offered on the second row. In all trim levels, and with the rear seats folded, the luggage compartment was symbolic, but the rear seats could be folded vertically along the body side.

Under the hood of the base version was a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine producing 131 horsepower, working in conjunction with a variator. As an alternative, a version with a hybrid power plant with the same engine, but operating according to the Atkinson cycle, was offered, to which a 30-horsepower electric motor was added. It was located inside a 7-speed robotic gearbox. The power source for the electric motor was a miniature battery under the front seats in the cabin. All versions were front-wheel drive in the base, and four-wheel drive with a coupling on the rear axle was available for an additional fee. In this case, instead of a beam, an independent suspension appeared at the back.

Third Generation

In the spring of 2024, the Japanese brand presented the minivan of the third iteration. The exterior has undergone significant changes, largely adopting the styling of German "classmates" of the late 2010s, replacing bold edges with proportions. The car's silhouette remained easily recognizable. Already at the start of sales, it was available in two trim levels. In addition to the base Air, the Crosstar with a "crossover" plastic trim in the lower part of the body, roof rails, and engine protection was offered. It also differed in the possibility of choosing between the standard 6-seat and 5-seat cabin for both versions. In the second case, a rigid shelf dividing the luggage compartment into two compartments appeared in the luggage compartment, which could be used not only for transporting goods but also for organizing a two-seat sleeping space.

The interior of the cabin has also undergone changes, like the body, becoming more conservative, including the front console, which has lost its 3-tier layout. Nevertheless, the characteristic horizontal shelves of the predecessors were preserved. Among the innovations, it is worth noting the appearance of wear-resistant seat upholstery and additional air deflectors for second-row passengers located on the ceiling.

In technical terms, the car largely reproduced its predecessor. The base versions still featured a 1.5-liter "atmospheric" engine, working in conjunction with a variator. However, for more expensive modifications, a new hybrid installation with the same gasoline engine, operating according to the Atkinson cycle, but together with two electric motors, was offered. One of them is used as a generator, powering the second electric motor, which directly drives the wheels. Most of the time, namely at "urban" speeds, this version moves on electric traction. However, with increasing speed, the ICE is connected to the driving wheels through a coupling, compensating for the lack of traction of the main electric motor.
