Produced since 2013 and to this day, the Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover. However, it wasn't always that way. From 1999 to 2006, this nameplate was used for a more compact crossover/SUV.

First Generation

The car debuted as the J-WJ concept in 1997. It turned out to be a pre-production model, which began to be produced with minimal changes in the winter of 1999. It was built on the platform of the compact hatchback Honda Logo. At the start of sales, a 3-door crossover with four-wheel drive was offered. In the fall of the same year, the Japanese brand introduced its front-wheel drive version. In the spring of 2000, the lineup was expanded again, but this time with a 5-door modification. It differed not only in the number of doors but also in a wheelbase that was 100 mm longer.

The engine range consisted of two 4-cylinder gasoline engines with a volume of 1.6 liters. Cars with four-wheel drive were equipped with a power unit with a VTEC variable valve timing system, which reduced fuel consumption at low speeds, adding torque and power at medium and high speeds, respectively. The front-wheel drive versions used an engine without VTEC.

Another interesting feature of the crossover was its chassis. In the front, a "MacPherson" was used, and in the back, a De Dion, which was extremely rare at that time, was used. Even when driving on uneven surfaces, it maintained the parallel position of the wheels relative to each other, providing a significant suspension travel. As a result, the crossover was able to drive on any surface without losing traction and had an unusually sporty, sharp handling for such cars.

Second Generation

The second-generation car was introduced in the fall of 2013, almost 7 years after the production of its predecessor was discontinued. This time, the platform of the subcompact minivan Fit was used. Externally, the crossover stood out with its coupe-like design and hidden rear door handles. In terms of practicality, the car was superior to the Fit, offering, in particular, a trunk with a volume of 453 liters and a ground clearance of 185 mm. To this, we should add the "borrowed" Magic Seat folding seat system from the minivan, which allowed for the transportation of taller items.
