The Nissan Xterra first appeared in the Japanese company's lineup in 1999. Initially, the vehicle was a compact SUV, but with the release of a new generation in 2020, it moved to the category of mid-size models, without having a technical connection with its predecessors.

First Generation

The car, presented in 1999, was developed at the California branch of the brand, becoming the first model in its history to be created and produced in the USA. The SUV concept prioritized strength, practicality, and low cost, which led to the use of a classic frame design, steel floor protection, luggage rails, and a special removable basket on the roof.

The base versions were equipped with a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with 143 horsepower, rear-wheel drive, and a 5-speed manual transmission. More expensive versions offered a 3.3-liter V6, producing 170 horsepower, working in conjunction with a 4-speed automatic transmission, as well as a four-wheel drive system - a classic "part-time", along with side steps and a sunroof.

In 2001, the SUV underwent a significant update, affecting primarily the equipment. The door panels featured card compartments, and the front console had a quarter-sized glove compartment, along with a card lamp with a built-in compass, sliding cup holders on the second row, four electrical outlets, windshield wipers with an "intermittent" mode, a 300-watt audio system.

Second Generation

The next-generation SUV was presented in 2004, having significant differences from its predecessor. It was created on the F-Alpha platform, shared with the Titan and Armada pickups, significantly increasing in size. This also led to changes in the engine range, which consisted of only one engine - a 4-liter V6 with 261 horsepower and 381 Nm of torque. Depending on the configuration, it worked in tandem with a 6-speed "mechanics" or a 5-range "automatic". The base versions had rear-wheel drive only, and the "part-time" with mechanical front axle engagement was available for an additional fee. Additionally, the standard equipment included a Dana 44 rear differential lock.

Third Generation

In 2020, after a five-year absence from the lineup, the Japanese brand presented a car with the same name, positioning it as All-New. Essentially, it was one of the variants of the frame SUV Terra, which was created based on the Navara pickup, but was designed for Southeast Asian countries. This model was aimed at more discerning buyers in the Middle East, standing out from the "original" with a design styled after the flagship Patriot SUV. Another difference was the interior, which was borrowed from the Japanese company's crossover. It was distinguished by a 7-inch instrument panel display and an 8- or 9-inch multimedia system. Top-of-the-line versions added an automatic braking system and lane departure warning, as well as improved sound insulation.

In technical terms, the SUV was almost identical to the standard Terra, having a "cargo" chassis with double wishbones at the front and a solid axle at the rear, as well as a four-wheel drive system with a mechanically engageable front axle, rear differential lock, and a reduced gear ratio in the transmission. The only power unit was a 2.5-liter gasoline "four", developing 165 horsepower and 241 Nm, combined only with a 7-speed "automatic".
